Parsons Kansas | What are the differences between 30,40, and 50 series tractors?Let's say something around 130 hp about the size of a 4430. What would be some model numbers of a tractor similar to a 4430 in a international or a CIH? I know a 5088 would be similar but what else? Thanks Darren

Leesburg, Ohio | Biggest difference I can remember in 30/40 series is different injector pump...40 series pump made a whole different tractor out of our 4430...lots more low end torque, didn't have to have thottle wide open to back up. 50 series had 15 speed power shift and mfwd available. Substantially more power in same size tractor. Heavier wheels and hitch.

South East Illinois | Better seat, 40-50 have hydr. seat better starting in cold weather

ecsd | The 50 series had the digital dash. You can see your mph, pto rpm, and engine speed.

East central Indiana | 30 series had 404ci block while the 40 and 50's had 466ci displacement. 40 had eight speed power shift, 50's went to the 15 speed.

North Central, NC | Maybe it was an option. I have a late model 4450 (1988) and it has the analog dash. Wish it had the digital readout though Edited by ACobb4020 6/11/2013 08:12

Faunsdale, AL | Hoosier has it right. Those are the most important differences. The 30 to 40 series change from 404 to 466 was a big step up. I would add the 55 and 60 series onto the end of the line. Not really a lot of difference there from the earlier ones. Main thing I can think of is electronic control of the rockshaft/3 pt hitch instead of mechanical. Oh, MFWD came out on the 50 series, the 40 series and earlier had hydrostatic FWA.

I believe the 30 series has the muffler and air intake opposite of the 40 & 50 series. 50 series has tan interior instead of black like the 40 series. I think the 4440 would be the same age as the 1086-1486. 4450 compares to 5088. 4430 compares to 1066 in age, size. Edited by IH_always 6/11/2013 08:24

EC IL | All three (4430 4440 4450) were very reliable tractors. Id prob lean towards the 40 or 50 series because of the 466 engine. Yes not all 50s had the digital dash, it was an option.

sw corner ia. | I have an '88 4450 with the digital dash and I see no benefit to the analog except it cost more up front, and toys sell.

SE MN | There were a lot of updates when the 40 series came out. Along with what others have already said about the engine and powershift transmission, on a 4440 vs a 4430, there was heavier front axle (some late 4430's have heavier front axle too), rear axles, drawbar and 3 point hitch. By putting the air intake to the rear of the muffler and the air filter above the engine vs ahead of the radiator allowed for a larger fuel tank on a 4440. All these things remained the same through a 4455. They are all popular today, especially a 55 series, and the selling prices reflect it. They are all very good tractors though. A 4455 overlaps with the production of the earlier CIH Magnums. In 1993 JD introduced the 7000 series tractors.

Parsons Kansas | On hydraulic capacity like for running hydraulic motors and such? Also about the air conditioner any big changes there? Thanks for all the info so far. Darren

Same basic hydraulic system across the board. Tractors with front assist got the larger 4 cubic inch per rev pump vs the standard 3 cubic inch per rev pump. Some 2wds may have had the larger pump installed at some point. No easy way to tell unless you can find a casting number or serial plate on the pump. 50 and 55 series have ISO quick couplers where 30 and 40 series have JD couplers unless updated.

4440 had a lot heavier transmission/rear end than a 4430.

Tip of the Thumb of Michigan | 55's had more hydraulic PSI. 2530psi over the 2250 in the 30-50. Guys run vacuum 12 row planters with 4440 all the time, so they will have decent flow. If it's in your budget get 4440 over a 4430. I have both and use them all the time and the 4430 is capable, but the 40 is so much more heavily built and it drives like it. You need a 1/4 of the foot pressure when split braking, the 3 point is heavier, bigger fuel tank, the 466 is awesome. I think the overall weight it around 1000-1500# more. The sound gaurd body is old, but I can still put in lots of long days very comfortably. All the levers are where they are supposed to be. Edited by arcticcatfarmer 6/11/2013 11:06

Macon, IL | AC pretty much the same. 4640 has a lot more 3pt lift capacity than 4630. Also in 50 series they went to fan clutches to improve fuel economy-vs a fixed belt cooling fan.

Pilot Grove, Missouri | My 89 4455 still has mechanical linkage for 3point hitch. Patrick

Statesville, NC | There are a lot of updates within the 30 series. I think a '77 4430 would be better than a '73 4430.
