I've heard that 450mhz will go thru more line of sight obstacles than 900. Does it reach as far and as accurate? What would be the cost of switching the radio that feeds a FMX. Just speculating because the 2 towers around here have poor coverage and hate paying over $800 per unit for something that you have to switch back to wass to do certain fields. TIA

The lower the frequency the better it will penetrate objects. Lower frequencies have longer wavelengths meaning less of the signal has to travel through any given thickness of an object.

Also the 902-928 MHz band is an open band that the FCC regulates to a max transmission output of 1 watt... Sort of plug and play mentality.

The 450mhz band requires an FCC license, like a business band radio, to operate and I think the radios are around 10 watts.

They should broadcast much farther and handle obstructions a little better.

I don't know about cost.

Just keep in mind that you will loose about 1" of horizontal accuracy for every 5 miles away from the base you are.

You might talk to the provider and have them put up a repeater. My provider put up two repeaters for us and I also have a portable repeater on a tripod that I use in a couple fields that we still have trouble in. This is on 900 MHz.

I've asked about the repeater and they have no interest in putting one up. They said to buy one would cost over 10,000. Thought maybe a for the subscription fees they would think its a good idea. Will have to keep researching.

They are lying to you. There are different prices on repeaters, but I think that their price is way out of range. I have two SNB 900 units I purchased used on Ebay a couple years or so ago for 600 to 800 dollars each and they then require a power supply, with an adapter and an antenna for a total price of 1000 dollars or less each. I think the SNB 900 units are made by Trimble. There are two or three different ways they can be setup, such as a repeater or a base (which I have never used).

I do not know where you are located, but it sounds to me that the RTK signal provider is more interested in the income than providing a service.

My RTK service provider came and he had a repeater in his pickup and we drove around to all of my fields to check signal strength. From the results he determined that if I was to get any kind of service he needed to put up two repeaters and as soon as I told him I was good to go he installed the repeaters. He has one or two other customers that are getting much better signal since he installed one of the repeaters. He has two towers I can pull off of and we checked both at each field and went with the one he claimed would be best. Last summer the tower we were pulling off of went down and I switched over to the other tower and then had to use my portable repeater a little more, but got the job done. I am not sure how many towers my provider has, maybe 10 or 12, but only two are close enough to me to use, but if I expanded to an area served by another one of his towers I could switch over to that tower with out any additional charge. My yearly rate allows me to use any of his towers at one rate.

Sounds like a load of bs to me. I am putting a repeater up as we speak. I bought a used snb900 for around 2k (if anyone knows where to get more for 6-800$ let me know!!).

Everything else is new. The only thing I did not have to buy is a tower and I have around $3,500 total invested in it.

Just keep your eyes open and have a search for SNB 900 emailed to you from Ebay. I purchased mine two or three years ago and the price may have change some since then.

I don't understand how a repeater costs over $10,000. I estimate with the repeater bundle and antenna you're looking at most between $2,500 and $3,000. I would say the repeater would be the way to go. I've put several up on coop elevators and have gotten great results from this. Converting to 450 is a hassle and will cost you more money.

You could be right about the income part at the dealer. Two rtk subscription I think I remember paying 1600. For the two towers they have. What does everyone else pay? They never have drive around with me to see how there signal is with my farm. If that's all in cost for a repeater 3000 I would have bought that 3 years ago. Guess I ll check e bay or ag talk classifieds

Prices have gone up i would say. I have been watching them for the last 12-18 months and rarely see one under $1,800.

I wouldnt mind another one or two if they are cheap but i am in the process of moving away from trimble products so evetually i will have glonass from a different company. Unless trimble gets smart and lets us use glonass with offbrand equipment.

Your estimates are a bit low...

I have around $3,500 in my setup so far without paying any labor, or buying any type of tower (may or may not be needed), and that doesnt include the cost of my enclosure or getting 120v power to the box.

My electrician buddy got me the box so i dont knkw what it cost yet.

I would estimate i will have around $4k in it and a days worth of time for two guys.

Or, run cellular on a VRS Network, the cell towers are your repeaters.
Also, remember that 450 FCC Lic are "shared channels" meaning the FCC give the same channel out to multiple users, so there is no guarantee that you will not get stepped on by other users on the same channel. Also, data radios are secondary users on 450, so they MUST stop transmitting when a voice user transmits.

Unless trimble gets smart and lets us use glonass with offbrand equipment.

I believe the latest firmware for the 750 and 1000 will accept RTK correction data in either RTCM v3 or CMR+ from a non-Trimble base, including GLONASS.

I am gonna be reverse of that. Trimble base into non trimble rovers. Right now i bought a cheap ms750 for use as a mobile base for tiling since i have the plow setup with a 252 currently.

I am planning to use this setup for tile plow, and mx305 for planter with case ih autosteer and 252, and my sprayer with insight and 252.

My other tractor is geo steer and any new equipment added will be Ag Leader as well.

Dont have glonass with this set up so its not a problem... but as of right now i am just repeating a neighbors trimble signal and that might be a trimble base with glonass in the future.

I am building this setup to accommodate
