Chebanse, IL..... | Well, we're going back on a limited scale anyway. It's been 30+ yrs since plowing "here". We bought an IHC #60 3-16s plow (1958 vintage) this winter & restored it. It will be going into the dirt...not just static display. Billy & Kurt did most of the mechanical work. Larry did the paint. We tried to make everything original (within reason) by using photos & the original OM. The cylinder is correct vintage also. Coulter bearings were all renewed.

Nice restoration. Do you have a local plowing day with the antiques that you take part in? INDY

Like to join you with my restored 460. I should probably give some serious thought to find a 3-14 plow of my own. Very nice work, thanks for the pics.

Nice job, still trying to get myself to find the time in the fall to use the 2-14's Deere we have behind my JD 50. Not restored yet, but someday I keep telling myself I'll get around to doing that, and using it on more than a garden.

Central Kansas | WOW,..........that is NICE! Would hate to get it dirty. Dad and I had a No. 8 plow if I remember correctly. I think we pulled it with a 656 Diesel back in the late 60's. Ron, you being a IH goo roo, am I correct in saying that a No. 8 plow was a IH? Time frame wise, newer or old than your No.60?

Schlegel Farms, Hagerstown Indiana | Great job on the restoration Ron. I do have to admit that I got a headache when the plowday pictures first came up...................Oh those Putt Putts with straight pipes. I grew up on those abominations, to this day I don't know how Deere sold those things.

You're not kidding. Borrowed Uncle Jack's model 50 with a loader - not enough hands. In 1954 Dad bought a Farmall 400 and life got a lot better even though it had no TA, no live PTO, 1 valve hydraulic, no fast hitch, and no power steering but it was NEW.

Central Minnesota | Those are great pictures! There's a few guys around here that get together and do the same thing. Sure, the big fancy, new, shiney iron is nice. But something about seeing the G's M's, and Wd's out there plowing that really just kinda makes your day. We still will do a little plowing with our G and sometimes even hook up the old 494 and plant some sweetcorn.

NE Iowa | We had that same combination for a lot of years except it was 3-14's and the 450 was a narrow front.

Coldwater, Michigan | Here I thought you were going to show us an "old" plow! For some reason I was thinking an old No 8 3-16" with an add on 3rd bottom. That is what we pulled behind our "M's" till we got to Cass County, Indiana that spring. One of the M's got an overhaul, the other 2 got slat bottom plows as did the overhauled one. A couple of the neighbors were over at the one farm on Sunday morning measuring how deep we were plowing because they had never seen an M pull 3-16 that fast in that neighborhood. They had never seen slat bottoms either.

Coldwater, Michigan | Slats were for heavy clay soils. Worked well. Next to impossible to hold a good furrow in a sandy soil type. When we bought the first farm in Cass County, Indiana we were used to Sandy soils. We could pull 3-16" in those sandy soils in 3rd gear with the M's. Went to Cass County and we needed 1st gear and after 7-8 rounds we needed to let the tractors cool down. Rounds were a half mile of heavy pulling in one direction. 3 M's with 3-16" and 1 H with 2-16" dropped in one after another. When you looked back you thought you accomplished something. Any one of those by itself and you knew you weren't getting much done!!!! Used to have the #8's with rubber and hydraulics. They originally had rooster combs and trip ropes, and the hitch with spring loaded trip. My dad got real tired of the trip ropes after we started getting a few more acres. By the way I think the tractor and plow look real sweet together. Your son and partners in crime did good work! Edited by Bill Moyer 4/7/2013 20:16
