| I have been looking at older disks and want to get away from JD. I have looked at several 496's and all but one need to eithor be welded on the center main frame were the wheels raise it up or else the main frame were the wings fold it up in the rear center frame. Are these disks really that feeble? I kind of wanted to get away from a JD disk but don't want to buy a wreck waiting to happen. I have done a search in machinery talk and in general they seem to do a good job but have no desire to buy one if the main frame will not hold up. Not much else around besides JD or case so am pretty much stuck with one or the other. |

Sibley county Minesota | Bought a used 33 foot 496 and it has no welds as of yet. |

north, ala | most I seen have welds even 3900,and 3950's, they do a good job leveling ,just make sure they have the correct cylinders and are good , b/c they are no depth control on the wings only fluid so if theres a cylinder bypassing it will cause some issues. |

MO | My 25 ft doesn't have a weld on it either. I haven't seen a lot with welds really. Seen several 490's welded up around the lift cylinder. |

Northwest Tennessee | I have a 496 and a JD 630. 496 is by far better. They level great. Mine has no welds or breaks. |

Faunsdale, AL | have had to rebuild the pivot tubes for the wheel lift on ours. Was worn really thin where it pivots in a saddle under the main frame. |

Central Iowa | we have had a 496 for a long time and love it. have had no problems with it at all. |

Woodbury county | I have seen a few 496's with welds.....I always thought the 496's with all the added weight of rear harrows were maybe the reason for the welds at the center frame above the lift wheels. I have a Case 3950 and really like the disk...... |

EC IL | Ive borrowed a friends 24 ft 496 & can not keep the wings from going in deeper than the main frame. He bought the update kit for the wing wheels, but didnt cure the problem. |

| Harrows are kind of manditory around here and maybe that has something to do with it. But some guys can break anything too. |

| Did you run the tractor hyds in"float" or regular position. We had a 496 for several years and I found that I had to put the hyds in "float" or either the wings or center section would run deeper, don't remember which now.
To the "OP". I had a 496 that was bought new when they first came out & just got rid of it a couple years ago. I never had to weld on anything.. My main complaint was when we had a mounted harrow on it we couldn't get it to level right in the spring. We took the harrow off & started pulling a "bed spring" harrow behind the disc & it leveled much better. |

SE MN | We've had a 25' 496 cushion gang for years and we like it. The wing hinge pins are now worn out and we try to keep them greased a lot. We have welded the main frame...the eye for one of the lift cylinders pulled out. I think this is caused by the design of the depth control stop. It is designed so that if you power the disk down, it pulls against the frame and with repeated cycles it simply damages something...it will also work loose and break the 3/4" bolts holding the rockshaft onto the frame. I think the fix is to use cylinder donuts or lower the disk by putting the hyd outlet in float. |

I usually ended up using the wing cylinders to take a lil weight off the wings, just to keep it from going in too deep. Ill have to try using the float position as you suggested. Thanks |

Monroe City, MO | I've had 496's and 3900's and 3950. The old 496 is the best of the bunch for doing a level job. Make sure as stated below to check where the axle tube twist. You can replace part of it but the axle would have to go to a machine shop to be rebuilt. |
