eastern Kansas | Today my brother was heading to the field and said all of the sudden on the road the 8100 started surging and then lost power. he said it sounded for a second like the motor was over speeding. got it to the ditch shut it off it threw a code of ECU31. Called JD as that code not in the book. they said it said injector pump bad but was probably just the motor speed sensor. started it up ran fine so got to the field and ranfor 45 minute when it acted up again. put a new engine speed sensor on fixed it for a little while and started acting again. got it home throwing the ecu31 code and he said once it threw a ecu34. I am not there but it is my understanding they just want to throw a different injector pump on right away. Is this right or should we try something else first? thanks

Solution Number: 23446 Solution Summary: Engine Surges Above 1500 Rpm's Publication Date: Jan 16 2003 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **Paper copies of solutions may not be the most current solutions** Symptom: Engine surges when above 1500 rpm and runs normal under 1500 rpm. Will happen after first start of day and won't repeat. Pressing the code button on the side console will display code ECU 034 or ECU 041 or PCU 040. Problem: On early tractors the ECU controller is sensitive to key switch contact bounce. Solution: Tractors below serial numbers listed below require an additional harness RE71260. Install RE161437 relay in additional harness. Serial number range: 8100 ( -002801) 8200 ( -002215) 8100T ( - ) 8200T ( - ) 8300 ( -003400) 8400 ( -002531) 8300T ( - ) 8400T ( - ) Instructions for installing RE71260 K13 relay wire harness: 1. Install circuit 002 (eyelet terminal) to red junction block inside right hand console. 2. Mount relay connector inside right hand console near load center. 3. Remove fuse 12 from Load Center. 4. Remove circuit 022B from Load Center fuse 12 position cavity A, cut end off and splice to circuit 022 of harness. 5. Remove circuit 322 from Load Center fuse 12 position cavity B, cut end off and splice to circuit 322 of harness. 6. Install circuit 002 (Pack-Con Autofuse Terminal) into fuse 12 position cavity A of Load Center. 7. Install circuit 202B (Pack-Con Autofuse Terminal) into fuse 12 position cavity B of Load Center. 8. Install circuit 011 (280-series terminal) into relay position DB1 cavity 3 of Load Center 9. Reinstall 20A fuse in Load Center position 12. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8400T, 8100, 8300T, 8200, 8200T, 8300, 8100T, 8400 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- START, LOSS, COLD, POWER, SPEED, MASK, CODE, SURGE, RPM, HESITATE, ERRATIC, LOW, FUEL, INJECTION, SPEC, CONTROL, PTS, RE71260 RE161437, ENG, F1808, F0400, F0413

Wyoming | We had an 8100 act like that and they said injection pump too. Turned out it was the packing on the connection for the small prefilter, fuel line was sucking air sometimes. They are a wide flat oring on each side of the little filter. Hard to tell they are bad, it felt tight but when I took it apart the one was mostly gone.
