West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge | I want to set the valves and injectors on a 855 big cam, but the engine has no ID plate on it, and it is transplanted out of an unknown truck. I used to set valves on newer N14's, but forget the exact procedure, I believe I used feeler guages for valves, edit: bottoming and back off for injectors. Do I need to know what exact engine I have to find the specs, and if so, how do you ID it without the tag?
Or is it safe to use the torque method on the injectors regardless of engine?
Also, it is possible to roughly measure what HP the pump is set to? The tag on the pump itself says 400 HP, but it may have been derated to go into the tractor.

Woodstock,New Brunswick.Canada | To get the CPL number for your motor look for a flat spot at the top of the block just under the head and over the starter, get the numbers from there and take them to a truck dealer that handles Cummins and they can look it up and give you the CPL for the motor you have.It has been so long since I have done one so that I can not remember the settings for sure ,I would have to look it up in my books up to the shop.If no one chimes in with the right numbers you can e-mail me later and I will find them for you. Also the N-14 and the Big Cam motors use different settings ,so make sure you have the right ones,I got into that mess a long time ago and it was not fun. |

Glad Valley SD | Becareful running the rack on these motors. There are two distinctly different methods depending on if it is an stc or a top stop motor. If it is an stc use the OBC (outer base circle) method. If its a top stop use the IBC (inner base circle) Useing the wrong method can result in major damage. Figure out what you have before attempting to set the overhead. |

West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge | Thank you for the advice, now that I found the # on the block, I will call Cummins on Monday and find out the CPL and make sure I get the right procedure. I checked # 1, and it is bottomed with about 72 inch pounds of torque, so it looks like that is the method, the valves are about 12 and 24 currently. |

West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge | Cummins found the CPL : 462, and the model name: NH/NT 855. But they won't tell the valve and injector set specs/procedure, they will sell the manual though. Haven't found that before. |
