I've got idea's about these and which brand seems to have the least amount misery to operate? The type I'm interested in has it's own high pressure diesel power unit built on to it. My mainlines will have about 1,000 gpm @ 25 psi.

I dont' think they make a reel that is misery free. They should call them "misery reels". I hate them and plan to never again use one. Around here there were Bauers, Hobbs (Reel Rain), and Ocimis?. You need twice the engine to run them as you do a pivot, and at the end of a hard day, you've done 10 acres. However, I realize not every field lends itself to a pivot. I'd rather do deep drip or furrow before reels. You pumping for melons or what?

Thinking about methyl bromide on some sand land that will be in drip once plastic is down for melons, I just need to wet the ground first. I HATE pivots because they're always in the way especially the spray machine and they leave the corners dry. Now if they'd wet the corners that'd be another story but as far as I'm concerned the scrap steel guy could haul every one of them off.

I'll find you some reels if you trade me for the pivots. I also got mucho paper watermelon bins that I ain't planning on using either. There's always room for more pivots in my operation. I love em. You can get corner systems now. We have grown a lot of lopes on plastic under pivots. No drip. I liked the setup. Just get a beaner to move the pivot after you make the first pass, then you're done with it. Timing is everything when pivots have to be worked around. I hate it when I see an idiot start on the side of the field. I always want them to spray next to the pivot first, then it can be moving while he goes to the edge. Then we he comes back, it will be out of the way. Sounds elementary doesn't it? Some people can't grasp it.

Never seen a TL corner system. I'll still haul it away for free.

That's news to me. I've seen corners for Valleys and Lindseys, but never on a TL. I suppose they'd have to use electric controls for it. That must be hard for a company that's so against electric. Anyway, let's don't tell George about any of this, maybe he'll give me those "annoying" pivots.

Hard hose reels are all that's used around here. They work good because average field size is around 20 acres. My counins have an RM, i think from Italy and they're happy with it.

Lots of guys are running Artex's and seem to have good luck, but Artex is local too. The website doesn't even list that they make hose reels but they used to at least.

I've run a hard hose irrigator for three years and have finally come to the conclusion that they are the least efficient way to apply water. Lots of work and fuel, I pump with diesel. And when the wind picks up you may as well shut them off.
I am in the proccess of going to a couple of linears for next year. I am fortunate enough to have fields that fit them well.

Locally several places make them. You can get any configuration you want.

The guys that talk about pivots and liniers are right about the water efficiency as you allready know. But I like the portability of the traveller. It fits my situation well and though I'd like to have a boom system for it instead of the gun, (sort of a mini-linier) I'll continue with the gun for now and be happy to have the water. It helps on our farm that we have a plentiful supply of water from a federal system. It also helps for this farm that the crops we raise are very hardy and take the larger water drops well. One thing I do see is a lot of folks dont take the time to properly setup the gun system and instantly talk down on it without understanding it was their own fault. I wish I had the picture the boss's bil took of our gun in operation last year. I'll see if I can get it someday, but here's the machine as it sits.

Valley & Lindsay both make corner systems. They're expensive !!! I priced one for my pivot a couple of years ago & the cost was $2000.00/ acre on watered acres.

We run Kifco (Ag-Rain) 37A's manufactured in of Havana Il.. These are pretty simple machines and I believe booster pumps are available for them. The other posters are right to say that their biggest drawback is the pressures needed to get them to run properly. I like the portibility and ease of setup myself and they can put down a lot of water.

I used to run a Bauer that had a hyd. front stand and legs. Hydraulic is the only way to go especially if you're going to have to move/reset it by yourself. It really wasn't that hard to use once you got the system down for timing it and moving it every morning and afternoon. It was a very expensive system to operate but at the time it was my only option.

One of my happiest days on the farm was when that thing left. I took the money I got for it and bought a dirt pan to level the ground we'd been pulling it over. Thats turned out to be one of our best decisions.

Around here, hard hose reels are known as "patented labor-running off devices"
