Northeast Louisiana | Is anyone making aftermarket seals for 55's yet? Last I heard I think they were only available through the 50's. We have a 44 leaking pretty badly and the OEM seals don't seem to ever completely fix the problem. |

Eastern Iowa | A&I ones work good. I heard the other day that Deere came with a new seal for the 55's that is GREEN and actually works. |

northwest tennessee | Is the shaft and collars in good shape? If you can feel anything at all on the shaft it would help if it was changed. I finally got some new seals from JD that were purple in color almost and they worked. |

Northeast Louisiana | Haven't pulled it apart yet, so not sure about the condition of the shaft. That may well be the problem. |

West Central Iowa | Deere has a new seal number for that application. The new number is R336625. It is thicker then the old number and so far seems to have taken care of the leaking problem. |

East Central Arkansas | I would check with these folks www.bolingmachine.com. |

Geuda Springs, Kansas | I checked with those guys about 3 months ago. The dont have seals past the 40 series. |

EC IL | I rarely change the seals anymore without changing the shaft. Seems like it does not take much wear on the shaft and its leaking. Its not worth the chance of having to tear it apart again in a few months |

SE Mo | ^^our experience as well^^ |
| |
| How much are the shafts through JD? |
| |
NESD | Unless you replace Key #19 bushing assy and the shaft you are likely going to have a leak again.

The desert of south central neb | Why do so many people have problems with them leaking after they put seals in? I've put in quite a few seals and haven't had any leak. |
| |
West Central Iowa | I have had them leak within months when EVERYTHING was new. In one case, the tractor had seen very little use before it started to leak. Also, they would always leak in the winter time when parked in cold storage. I really believe JD had inferior seals they were selling for several years. When we did the last one with the latest part number seals, we compared the old seals to the new seals and the new ones were quite a bit thicker.......larger on the OD and smaller on the ID. |

SW WI | $165 for the shaft. Just put one in a 4255. |

Dietrich, Idaho and Mountain Home, Idaho | I had this same problem with my 4250 a few years back. I replaced the shaft, the seals(twice) and finally ordered replacement supports(#19). Well before the supports arrived I had to get the tractor back together to use and decided I would remove the supports that were on the tractor and swap sides so the shaft was pushing on the less worn part of the bushing inside the support. Long story short, it hasn't leaked since and I have two brand new supports waiting for the time these others finally wear out. |

NW Oklahoma | I replaced shaft, bushings, and seals in September of 2012 in my 4450. No leaks the rest of season drilling wheat. Noticed last week, when walking by it in shed, big puddle of oil under it. Pulled dipstick and couldn't reach oil. Maybe my dealer had old stock seals. They were white seals. Guess I get to do it again. Where can a person order the new, and improved seals? Tried to get seals from A&I first time and they said they had discontinued the seal for 4450's. |

NW Oklahoma | When did the change take place? |
| |
West Central Iowa | I am not sure when JD changed the number.........I think within the last year. At first you could still get the seal under the old number, they did not automatically sub it up to the new number. Now it subs up to the new number. |

NW Oklahoma | Thanks. I will have to check with dealer and see which one they sold me. |

| JD has about 3 (I think) different shim sizes available. The tighter you can get it the better. More important than a new shaft unless shaft shows wear in the seal area. Check for roughness in the center of the shaft where the sensor lever strikes it and dress down. Lube shaft / seals before installation.

NW Oklahoma | Yes there is three thicknesses of shims. I shimmed it as tight as I could and greased seals and shaft when going back together. Even put new bushing in front of yoke. Couldn't belive it leaked but it did.
