sw MI | 15 years or so ago we bought an irrigation pump powered by Deere. When we got it it had a Yanmar/Deere engine. We were skeptical but dealer said deere owned yanmar. It turned out to be an awesome engine. About 15,000 hrs later the engine is giving up. So we ordered two new ones. One to replace the tired one and the other to take some pressure off the other one and to have a backup. The new ones don't have any Deere marking anywhere on them like the old one did. So, does anyone know what's going on? Does Deere own Yanmar anymore? Thanks for your input. |

| As far as I know yes. They never sell anything, just moth ball it. It's just like Cat and Mitshubishi. |

Pesotum, IL | No, Deere never did own Yanmar. Yanmar has supplied John Deere with engines that they branded with the John Deere name. It's like the Iveco engine in CaseIH. It has some CaseIH logos on it (specifically the valve cover I believe) but it is an Iveco engine. |

NE ND | This would be news to me. I worked for Deere for 8.5 yrs and never heard of this. They are great engines. I was told once almost all of Yanmars assembly is done by robots which maybe equates to a high level of quality. One thing I learned the hard way is that yanmar numbers their main bearing caps with #1 starting at the flywheel. Didn't damage anything, but took a looooong time to figure out why the crank wouldn't turn when the caps were bolted down. |

| Sorry,
Deere never owned Yanmar. There is only a business partnership for engines & small tractors between the two.
Much like Deere & Hitachi... |

south central MN | Yanmar powers all of Thermo King's reefer units and APU's also. |

Sunburst Montana | JD and Yanmar have been working together since the 70s. We have 3 Yanmar engines in a JD 455,JD 790, and a gator. Great motors. |

WY, OK | Back in the '80s the exchange rate allowed Deere to have tractors built in Japan and have them shipped here cheaper than making them here. These were the smaller 50 series tractors built by Yanmar, some of the best Deere tractors around IMO. WE have a 1650, great on fuel, just as much power as our 2950 and still starts in any temp and purrs like a kitten. I'd assume they did the same with stand alone engines. Only thing on our 1650 that is a dead giveaway it wasn't made here is the Japanese writing on the oil fill plug. AFAIK Deere/Yanmar still have the engine relationship, not sure if any tractors are still built by them. |

| And some of those thermo kings have lots of hours on them-run all day, all the time |

|
| The difference with CaseIH and Iveco is that both are full subsiduaries of Fiat... Yanmar is it's own entity and builds on contract for Deere.

Pesotum, IL | True, good point. Didn't think about it that far when I was making the comparison. |

| I have an 05' Ingersoll Rand 185 CFM air compressor that has a 4 cylinder Yanmar motor and has to be one of the best starting smoothest running small diesel motors I have ever been around, at that time you could get either a 3 cylinder Deere motor or the 4 cylinder Yanmar, and before looking at and purchasing it I thought it had the Deere motor and was actually disapointed when I discovered the Yanmar but after hearing it run decided to buy it anyway, and it has turned out to be a great motor and runs smoother/starts better than the neighbor's identical compressor with the Deere motor, personally thing an even number of cylinders make a motor run smoother. |

NW Washington | Yanmar is a big outfit that makes diesel engines from small air cooled units to huge marine power units, and a lot of other machinery and equipment including tractors.

The Internet | Dennis SEND - 2/22/2013 23:31 personally thing an even number of cylinders make a motor run smoother. They explained it in one of the motorbike magazines I used to subscribe to, but I am almost certain that a 3 cylinder engine is better balanced than a 4 cylinder, JD used and still probably do use balancers on their Saran 4 cylinder engines. Not that this has anything to do with Yanmar engines :-) |

West Central Minnesota | I have to agree with the Pretender, a four cylinder engine has inherent vibration problems. I also had this explained to me by a engineer who started with Minnepolis Moline and then moved to John Deere. A three cylinder on the other hand does not experience these issues. I wish I could explain this in laymens terms, but that is not my realm of expertise. |

I just passed a semi on the interstate yesterday with a load of Yanmar tracked skid steers on it. |

Faunsdale, AL | Have had a few here. They don't stand abuse overheating etc as well as the old Deere engines. Had trouble keeping head gaskets on a couple of them. Did everything right when replacing, but probably should have been buying new head bolts or something. |

S.C. Wisconsin | Once had a 7800 Gehl skid loader with Yanmar and traded for the 7810 with the Cummins, the Yanmar had more power and was smoother. Best running skid loader we have now is the Cat with the Mistubutshie engine.

Ontario Canada | are Yanmar powered. Hoping they put a Yanmar diesel in the quads too. |

| It's only a partnership between the two companies. Yanmar also sells Deere tractors in Japan: http://www.yanmar.co.jp/agri/products/johnDeere/index.html |

Missouri | I don't know who owns what and don't care, but I do know I've seen lots of things with variants of yanmar's little 3 cylinder diesel in them, and they never disappoint. |

| I wasn't implying that yanmar was mothballed. Just that a number of these companies (deere/Cih) buy things and either never use them just so someone else doesn't have access or utilizes a percentage of it. Most of the John deere dealers in my area use to sell the lime green yanmars before they were fazed out. Yanmar is deffinatly alive and well from lawnmowers to ships. Would recomend yanmar products to anyone, they are pretty much bulletproof, easy on fuel, and start good in the cold. |

sw MI | Well thanks for all the input. I guess I don't really care either who owns what. I loved our old Yanmar diesel and am excited about our new ones. Tony |
