Subject: UFT/John Deere 500 grain cart

Weatherford, OK
Was wondering if anyone had one, or has had one and how it held up. Will the auger work with a low sided grain trailer? Any experiences good or bad would be appreciated. TIA

Not sure how our UFT 400 compares, but we us it to load semi-trailers. It is all it needs not any too long to reach our Jet trailer but it works for our needs.

we have a uft 400 also I think it has an auger ext on it our triaxle has 6' sides and it just barley sneaks over it. pretty easy to find a dip to park the truck in out here it really isnt that bad. keep an eye on the gear box ours likes to get full of fines flush it out and pjt in new oil every season

I have had both a 400 and a 500. The 500 is a better cart with a  little longer reach than the 400. A 500 will hit the low side trailer in the center on a level surface without too much problem. Compared to new carts they are not real speedy unloaders but do ok. The weakest point of the 500 is the gearbox. You need to change oil in each before each season.  Mine never spent a night outside one season and spent all winter in a shed.  The next fall I went to change the oil in it and it was still contaminated.  I changed oil every year and never had a gearbox failure. I sold the cart to neighbors and told them to change oil each year and it is still going strong after a total of 10 years now.

Edit:  I would not say they are the best cart out there. The newer corner augers are nicer but for the money you can get one for they are worth looking at.

The Wetmore, or UFT carts were sold as Deere branded carts.

The Deere 1210 and/or 1210A were the UFT 400. Top picture.

Later UFT replaced their 400 cart with a improved model. Second picture.
Notice how the auger fold point is not staight.
And I think there was a hydraulic shut off on this model.

The cart the OP is asking about is the model 500. I think the model number for both UFT and Deere. 3th pic

I have a UFT like in the top picture. And I have noticed many that I have looked at have a shorter auger.
My cart will fill a semi, but not a lot of reach to spare. Thinking the shorter auger ones would have a hard time with tall trucks.

Being later I would think the side auger model 500 would be OK on semi hopper trailers.

Picture #4 - This is a UFT cart, pretty much the same as the Deere 1210A in the top picture.
However notice how the top of the folded auger sticks out past the transport rest.
And how the one in the top picture the top of the auger is right on the rest.
The Deere model has the shorter auger. While the UFT one is the longer auger.
Pretty sure the later Deere 1210A units would have the longer auger.

And again I think a 500 would work on todays trucks. Maybe not the best however.

I have both a UFT 500bu and a JD 500 bu. The only difference is one is orange and the other green. I use them mainly as gravity wagons that I back up over a swing away auger. I do occasionally fill a semi a few times directly from the carts during harvest or sweeping out a bin so the trucker doesn't have to wait. Each cart with additional sides will hold about 450-475 bu of corn so it will just be just about right to fill a semi legally between the two. I am a small operator but I like the carts very much especially for what they cost me compared to bigger gravity wagons or the newer, bigger carts.

I love mine I have done a few modifacations to it but for The money I really like it. It will unload into a high sided grain trailer if you are carefull. The biggest down fall is all the weight it puts on the tractor. It will clean out to less than half a 5 gallon bucket full.

I built it. used a cylinder off a reel lift for I think a 930 flex. It was fairly simple to build. It really helps not needing to be exact when pulling up to truck. To build it right the cyl ought to be up beside the spout so that you have more clearence but I didn't take the time to do it right.

Thanks for the response and pics Matthew. Is that the standard length of the unload auger? If so it looks like good clearance on a low sided trailer. Are the bin extensions factory or did you build them? With the extensions how many bushels does it hold? What size tires does yours have? Thank you.

We gotten rid of ours a long time ago. However I think our auger was extended about a foot. It was a great grain card but just did not have the capacity for two combines.

By chance do you have any photos inside the tank where you made moved the auger gate indicator? I extended my standard pipe a few inches and have refrence marks on the auger that I can see it's position by looking in my rear view mirror on the left side of the tractor. Also, on your chute, did you put a rubber seal on the back side of the hinge or isn't one needed there? I "pivoted" up my rubber spout after one year and that made a big difference in loading the semi. I gained about a foot of additional clearance that I can be away from the truck and still hit center from the way it was originally.

To the OP: I have the UFT500 version, and it's been one of my best buys ever. Reason being: it does the job and cost was very reasonable. Clean out will vary from 2 bu to 15 depending on how wet the corn is, and how quick you want to shut it down and head back to the combine. Mine has 18" extensions and they are a bit tall for older combines, took one side down to a 10" extension for the 1460 when I had it. Probably a bit heavy for the axles too fully loaded, I figure I have around 600 + capacity if it's totally full. 550 is a good load.

On a standard 41' x 66" side wilson, with a normal "full" load I will easily fill one hopper and be back into the second one for 50 bu or so as a guess, thats loading to right at around 1000 bu total on the hopper.

Listen to the advice above about changing the oil in the gearbox each year before starting - I have done this 5 years now and never had a problem, one of those years was with 32% moisture corn as well (2008) Always close the control and clean out before stopping the auger as well.

X2, couldnt keep gearboxes in ours even with doing an oilchange every season.
The other issue was keeping the auger sealed, most modern designs use the weight of the auger to keep it sealed. These do not... any jerky movements by the cart operator during unloading would start a leak that could only be stopped by emptying the auger, folding it up, and re-opening it. Not a very good design, plus it didnt clean out very well.

With all of that said, we had ours for close to 15 years..

That is the original auger. It has 23.1-26 tires which some had 18.4-26 and I would go with the bigger if you could ,will ride a lot better, and be better in the mud and set it up higher. I think the guy I bought it from made the extensions. It will hold 600 bushell easy and I have had 635bu of wheat on it. As far as the boot it does have a rubber seal to keep the grain from coming out around the side. I thought I had pics of the indicator inside the tank but I cant find them sorry. I can get some sometime when I get the cart out of the shed but will be june probably.

We put a ball switch in to indicate when the auger was closed. Helped end running grain on the ground when auger was not fully extended. Also put a light in the tank and on auger to light into trucks. Combine operator appreciates light in tank. Clearance is good, only have issues with dump trailer. It has higher sides. New trailer for the coming harvest so hopefully no more issues. Got good at repairing tube when it gets against truck. Also put cameras in tank, on back and auger. Makes it a little more user friendly.
