| Looking at buying a truck was wondering what the difference between a auto trans and a ultra shift. Don't know much about either one. It would be in a triple axle straight truck for hauling from the field to the farm and to town. Is one better than the other as far as workbility or realiability. Want to be sure it is NAT approved before I purchase one! Also, what do some of you suggest for makes, models, engines, etc. TIA | |||

Wi | Automatic will be an Allison and will drive like any other automatic. Autoshift has clutch. It will be an Eaton. Ultrashift has no clutch. Also an Eaton Freedomline (Meritor), and I-Shift(Volvo) are also automated manuals. Advantages to both. Ultra is tough to "inch" but if you are missing a left leg it can be nice. Personally I am a KW fan and prefer a C15/3406. Cummins is my next choice since KW didn't use many Detroits. The 60 series is an efficient engine that is cheap the rebuild if needed. Cat will cost the most to rebuild, Cummins will be in the middle. The reason I choose KW is equally service, comfort and quality. I have a high standard to all three of those. Some people do not. In that case many trucks will fit your bill. I will say Mack/Volvo tend to be pricey to work on with slow parts. Pete/KW tend to keep things common over the years which is nice. Nothing wrong with a good ol freightshaker either. Many people also like their sterlings too. They aren't around anymore, but parts come through Daimler. Edited by durallymax 2/21/2013 18:16

Dennison, IL | I have the ultra shift in a Mack semi, but if I had a choice I'd rather have a clutch in there. It works fine though. Ultra shift would shine with inexperienced operators.

And the auto is just like in your car or truck.

Ultrashift doesn't have a clutch in the cab.

Dennison, IL | I have to disagree. It is not like your car or truck. I believe it has a centrifugal clutch that will engage at a low rpm. There is no torque converter. The only difference between the two is just that. There is not much feathering with the ultrashift.

Woodham, Ontario | I have an Allison auto in our feedtruck, a 2012 International Workstar with a 475 HP MaxxForce13 with a Penta TMR mixer. The transmission is very similar to a pickup truck. put it in drive and press the gas pedal. No clutch. You can keep it in any gear you want. It's easy, not sure if it is the most efficient on the road, but it works great for feeding.

Slicker than a Yes album. | How does the Ultrashift Plus enter into the scene? What's different from the old Ultrashift?

mascoutah, IL | We have a columbia with an ultrashift. I personally like it but I have never driven a manual in a semi so I have nothing to compare it to. You can shift it manually on the column if you need to get a load out of the field. It makes it very easy to learn. The "real" truckers will flame you for it but I don't claim to be a real trucker and with only driving 6-7000 miles a year I'm not sure I'd be that sharp anyway.

Liberty, MO | Only comment I will make is the clutch, no pedal in cab can be quite expensive to rebuild or replace , but will last a long time if not slipped much, I,m driving an Eaton-Fuller Auto-shift in my Volvo, old fashioned I guess.

Dell Rapids, SD | dmswil, has stated it perfectly! The Columbia with an Ultrashift with a small cummings would be a great truck for your purpose. Some guys will only drive a Peterbuilt with 500 hp and a sleeper with a 43 ft trailer but I think they are doing it to makeup for a shortfall in there pants.
