SW WI | I know this is machinery, but I think the guys here on livestock talk just seem to cover things like this better. Just my level of comfort since I read here everyday (I don't always make it to the machinery page), and it just feels like I know the regulars here. Looking for a new bi-fold rake, I have an older H&S 12 wheel rake. It was sort of rough when I got it and draw pin popping out twice over the years with other dings that I don't know where they came from (and I'm the usual operator) make me think its time for something else. I'm looking at a Kuhn, probally want the center kicker wheel. I have some nasty hills that is to steep for corn so we make hay on them. A problem that I have had is the H&S won't trail decent sometimes. It wants to bounce down the hill. Maybe they all will when I go bi-fold, the old NH 258 (single) trailed good, just took long time to rake. What brands do you like or have had good luck with? Thanks.

West Central WI | I switched to a v-rake from a nh and deere bar rake to 1 v-rake, I looked at a lot of them, and for what I needed went with a kuhn. It had a wider track and seems to be very stable on hillsides. H&S recently started making a new version of their wheel rake (quick pik) they call it. Haven't seen one work, but they look kinda interesting, they are supposed to raise quicker on ends so you don't have to stop, but fwiw, I dont have to stop with the kuhn either.? We like our NH 216 rake. It doesn't flex much for rough ground. I was thinking of a wheel rake for those rougher places. Is a 12 wheel rake big enough to put two 16 foot windrows together?

Last year I hired a guy to do all my raking. He had an 8 wheel Rhino V-rake. Did an excellent job. This year we're doing our own raking so we just ordered a new 10 wheel Bush Hog V-rake with the individual suspension on each wheel. Really looking forward to using it this summer. They tell me that Rhino, Bush Hog, and New Holland V-rakes are made by Sitrex.

Camp Douglas Wi. 40miles nw of wi. dells | I trade equiment with a neighbor, kuhn I think sr616 pulls in 32' but I use it in the fall to rake cornstalks, I set it for 22' rake right in the combines tracks as we have a 12x22" cornhead with kniferolls that is 22' don,t chop stalks, rakes everthing but about half of the stalk. Its built heavy works great. Edited by DB Tracks 2/21/2013 16:54

iowa | i have a vermeer vr1224 I have come to like that style of rake. That rake will handle large volumes of crop, very nimble, excellent spilters and simple to use.

West Central Iowa | Recently I bought a single rotary rake because I heard good things about them in regards to drying alfalfa hay. Didn't want to spend the "big" bucks on a center delivery dual rotary. After I used the single I liked it so much that I started looking around and was able to find a Kuhn 7301 for under $9000. It needed a few days of work to go through and make sure all the adjustment were free and everything was tight as it should be. LOVE the job it does on alfalfa grass mix hay. Doesn't drag dirt into the windrow, doesn't rope wet hay from the bottom side of the windrows I put together, and believe I can get baling 3-4 hours sooner than a comparable width wheel rake (or at least there are no wet "roped" spots even if I start baling at the same time). There is nothing I hate more than trying to make a decision around 8:00 AM the day the hay needs baled and there is a chance of an afternoon rain. This rake makes me more comfortable knowing the hay will be evenly dried and ready to bale just after lunch.

Ridgway, IL | We use a circle c golden eagle. Only put 5-600 bales on it last fall (stalks and oatlage) but it's simple and seems pretty tough. (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (50KB - 566 downloads)

Missouri | Have to have a 14 wheel for 16 ft swath. Not to say it wouldn't ever work, but goes back to you get the rakes so flat they want to drag fully out. Much better with a V.

Central Illinois | I would lean to the Kuhn v-rake. I sold them and used them. They are nice rakes. On the SR models you can lock the left side up and only use the right side or drop both and use both of them. I know guys that traded John Deere, Vermer, and H&S v-rakes in for a Kunh rake. I had some guys say they now enjoy raking hay because of the Kuhn rake. It has a high clearance to it so when you finish in the middle of the field you will not drag your windrower out with you. And yes it is heavy built.

Eastern iowa | I am not at all impressed with my 12 wheel sitrex. I like the looks of the kuhn but haven't seen on run.
