Will triticale harvested around heading for dry hay make good cow feed. Have thought about baleage just don't know if I will be able to get someone to wrap it when I need it. Will the dry hay be pallatible if put up early enough?

Southern IA
you got about a 5 day cutting window to get it between boot and heading, once it is headed out it is tough to get them to eat it, gets pretty rank, chopping or baleage is the only way to go unless you are in the arid west

The beards can cause problems if you wait till headed out.

No Mans Land , Cimarron co. OK.
It makes good hay if it is put up right, I put up several 1000 ton each year. I try to start swathing when it is about 10% headed, most here is beardless so I will let it go just a little longer, been doing this for a good many years and never have a problem with cattle eating it . Lots of circles here are green chopped too.Had some of last years circles produce 1000 4x4x8 bales each so water the thunder out of it and give it some N and it will produce tonnage .

Made triticale/rye hay this spring. Started heading before I could cut it. Cows seem to love it.

Im going to graze mine first.. then let it re grow for baling. I should be in more favorable haying weather by then..... I expect a very fast regrowth through June... and I got a bad feeling it'll head quick! Hopefully the 'beardless' variety holds true!

If you go with balage, i would use a preservative like silo guard. We bought some balage that had acid on them and there was a considerable amount of spoilage compared to the ones with the preservitive.
