Can anyone tell me how to do a do-it-yourself Cat Neutering.
I had a visit with a New Zealand Sheep farmer and he said he always did it himself and couldn't imagine having to pay for it. He said he put the cat head-first into a sack and then just gave a quick slice, just like with the sheep.
I don't have much experience with animals, veterinary wise, but I figure this might be a good place to start.
The First and Last cat I ever paid to have neutered went missing 3 weeks after he got snipped and it cost me over $300 to have him done. So I'm looking for a more economical solution. |

northwest tennessee | I have heard to put them down in a tall boot with the back legs hanging out and maybe duct tape the legs to the boot. I would have someone holding the make sure he didnt back out too. Cats can make some wild moves. |

monticello iowa | Many of cats cut in a tall boot at our farm. I would suggest getting all the feet in the boots. Sharp nails and a semi sharp knife don't mix very well. Good luck sometimes you only get one nut in the struggle but it is a good place to start. |

Midwest | Cat in a boot. (head first of course), lol.
First time, just took tin snips and cut them off. Cat ran off and didn't see him/it for 2 weeks, we figured it died. Finally came back, but was thinner.
Other cat, tried useing a rubber band. It worked, but, took a long time, dont do it in warmer weather.
Both cats turned into fat cats. Didnt run around looking for ______ anymore I guess. |

| Neighbor "cut" his dog once. He said he pinned the dog to the ground with a pitchfork thru the collar. When the job was done he pulled the fork out of the ground. He said the dog was pi$$ed and went after anyone he could. That was the last time he cut a dog. I'd want to make sure that cat was as secure as possible before cutting out his family jewels. |

Northeast Louisiana | I have no advice, but please, please, please, videotape it so we can all share in the experience. |

Faunsdale, AL | Find a cheaper vet.
One cat bite to a finger and the vet fee will look really reasonable. There have been some really nasty infections from cat bites to the hand. |

| we banded my sisters cats with a sheep/lamb bander, stuck it in a boot head first and it worked well. |

oklahoma panhandle | You will also need a par of welding gloves!!!

S.C. Wisconsin | We used to pin them in the milk house door. The last ones I have did got a shot of Propofol. Much easier as they are sleeping. |

Kingston,Mi | I helped my Dad do 1 tomcat, insert cat head first into a 5 gallon milk can and held him by the feet and held the tail opposite. Dad had sharpened his pocket knife a min. later and a splash of iodine (that did absolutly nothing to improve "it's" disposition) and we turned it loose. I'm with several of the others, package the cat in the carrier, leave at vet's office overnight and then retrieve sulky cat. |

northwest tennessee | But how do you get your hands on propofol. Do you know Michael Jacksons doctor? |
northwest tennessee | When I worked for a vet we would dust the cats balls with an ear powder but cant remember what it was for. It would make the hair where you could grip it and could pull all of the hair off of his bag and would be as smooth as a babys butt. Then cut him and was alot easier than trying to clip the hair. |

Oh if I ever decided I absolutely had to have old Marmalade done he'd go to the vet! At 15 pounds and sharp claws he would be a piece of work to hold down. I figure why piss off a cat that keeps us rat/mouse free??? |

Seaforth, Ontario | by stitching in a pair of marbles (size is up to you) so he will feel whole again. Extreme pet owners are having neuticals implanted after getting Buddy neutered to help their self-esteem; moreso the owners. Here's a link to company that has supplied 100,000 fake testicles.

| Well, if he's a real shepherd, and he wants to do like they do with the lambs, he'll have to use his teeth. Seriously, that's how some people castrate lambs. Not me however, cats or lambs. |
NM | We used to use our teeth on lambs. That was before bands. |
| Please folks. Put a dog to sleep before you denut him! We used to put our dog to sleep for a haircut. Wouldn't let you near him with a scissors. He had the funniest dispostion when he had to protect himself. If he could talk. "I hate like hell to do this! But I gotta bite cause I HATE haircuts". |

Northeast CO | I put a band on my cat. A couple weeks later I stepped on a fuzzy pebble, they finally fell off. They will puke a few times the first couple hours (who can blame 'em??) |

| I was never shepherd enough to use my teeth. Never had much use for bands. Always was done here with the All-In-One. |

| Never witnessed or participated in the boot method, but always heard a 5 buckle overshoe was best. |
Texas/New Mexico Stateline | I've done the boot method once. It is quite a hair raising experience trying to hold a mad tom in a boot, and a sharp knife with the other. Just kinda sat on the boot with the business end hanging out. But really I didn't see much ill effects from it afterward. I tried to make as small of an incision as possible, work the nuts out and snip snip. A few hours later he, uh, "it" was coming around wanting attention. No hard feelings at all. And he quit spraying every thing. We have two neutered toms and they do a good job still on the mice, because they are around all the time, not roaming the countryside.

| I wouldn't dream of cutting any of our cats! Of course our cat situation is more of a "systems approach" rather than individual cats. |
