Wisconsin | Took a trip to New Orleans to visit a friend who is working at the terminal as a trainee and was able to get a close up and personal tour of the facility. Really puts things into perspective! I thought I'd share some pics of what we saw. They were unloading soybeans from barges at the time and were just beginning to load the ship which was headed to China. If anyone has any questions ask away and I can try to answer them! Southern MB | how much would be in one of those barges?

Wisconsin | approximately 50,000 bushels in a barge. The barges that were being unloaded were around 9 1/2' of draft so they most likely came from somewhere between Louisiana and St. Louis.

Mississippi Delta | I've never seen a picture of a marine leg before, that thing is BIG!. Probably don't take them long to unload a barge with one of them.

Wisconsin | approximately an hour and a half to unload the barge. Each of the scoops on the leg can hold 33 bushels. Edited by Chris22 2/10/2013 23:12

Slicker than a Yes album. | Nice pics! I would like to see some of their other terminals. Only been to Savage, #2 house in St Paul and Winona. Myrtle Grove and the ones on the west coast are tops on my list!

East central Iowa | How many beans are left in the barge? That doesn't look like something that would get them all out. I expected a vacuum.

Wisconsin | They actually have an anchor on the top of a bobcat and use a cable to lower it down to push all the commodity to the scoops. It really does a good job of cleaning the barge out.

Texas/New Mexico Stateline | I had wondered about that. I imagined a bunch of guys down in there with push brooms and scoop shovels!

Caldwell County Kentucky | What about rain? It doesn't look like there's a roof over the barge unloading scooper.

Wisconsin | I asked the same question. They will keep working if it is raining, but will shut down if raining hard enough.

Near-north Ontario, French River | If they can unload a barge in 90 minutes its going to take a fairly significant rainfall to do any real damage to an exposed barge. We've had wagons caught in the rain before and never had any spoilage issues.
