Subject: Montezuma tool boxes

Georgetown, Tx
So I'm finally gonna break down and buy a tool box for the flatbed and was wondering wich model of montezuma box is recommended. I think I want an me300b that I can get from rural king on eBay for $395. I will use it for a standard set of wrenches, I have duplicates from 1/4-3/4 and singles of 13/16 up to 1 1/4, and I have a set of approx ten screwdrivers and a set each of 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive sockets, a few pliers and a couple hammers, crescents, and a pipe wrench. It appears it will all fit from the pictures but I don't know for sure cause I've not actually seen one in person. Thanks for any advice.

I have the large box with room for both metric and standard wrenches and sockets mounted in my pickup. Wouldn't trade it for any other box.

They are decent boxes but nothing like they were originally. I have a 36" and it is full. Had a 30" that I sold for $20 less than I gave for it after 5 yrs use.

I was in your exact spot a year ago. These fellas didn't tell me wrong. It is unbelievable how many tools the Montezuma can hold !! If you ever need metric, you'll be wanting the big box.

I pondered price and needs for about 5 years before buying the big one. I've been somewhat less pleased with it than I had hoped.

Previous box had a couple of compartments which readily held a couple of aerosol cans (1-ether, 1-WD40). Montezuma box has no such compartment, and I miss it. Still looking for the "perfect" box. showboat

From the tools you listed, you want the 30 x 15 medium sized box (ME300).

The bigger box isn't worth it unless you need metric capacity. Even then, a lot of guys run the ME300 anyhow and carry a metric wrench and socket set somewhere else on their truck. Seems like it really comes down to how much metric work you anticipate.

I have the same box.  My first cylinder lasted several years, then lost it's ability to hold the box open.  Put a replacement on last spring.  Just recently I bent the cylinder shaft when the wind caught the lid.  I will make some kind of opener stop for the lid.  Chain or something.  Have you had this problem?   Called company and complained.  Got my replacement cylinder in the mail today.

A Hurricane by Spring Creek? I bought a box from them a little cheaper than a Montezuma, the wrench pegs were stouter than the Montezuma I messed with at RK and Almost everything I have has weak gas shock lifts on it.. The spring creek opens in the middle, bottom folds out into a tray to hold parts (screws/nuts/etc.) and the upper part folds back out of the way and unaffected by wind. So far, water and dust proof. Well made.

Thank you, just got the black boxes on last friday, haven't got much in them yet. I still have to get the fuel tank and the air compressper mounted when it warms up a little more.

I would buy the 36" crossover box. I had the 300b and upgraded to the crossover. Love how both sets of wrenches are facing you and you have tons more room for sockets of all kinds metric and standard, shallow and deep.

I also have the spring creek. A little cheaper than the montezuma. Works great for me.

I had a salesman tell me the 36" crossover box would not make a good road box, are you guys happy with them on the truck?
What are the pros and cons of the 36 over the 30" ?
Thanks

I have had the 36" crossover mounted on my service truck for a couple years. It replaced a 30x15 montezuma, the 36 is a better box hands down. I like the metric/standard holding capacity and the large area under the flip up socket tray. I put a pliers rack in there to keep things organized, its ridiculous the amount of tools that thing holds. Not sure why salesmen say its not a good road box they told me the same but 3+ yrs and no complaints.
