Need a new square baler and am trying to settle on one. Looking at bc5060 or 338. Would like some opinions on both I guess. Had a 336 and sold it this fall. It was tired

We only run new holland balers. They are basicly junk but they are the best piece of junk out there. We bale for automatic bale wagons and the 5070 s run circles around the rest, cat , Deere or whatever . We have lots of problem with all the bearings , plunger, kicker finger and horse head , all replaced within one year , one month for that matter. New balers warranty at the end of season and rebuilt will get you two seasons and you need to be trading her.Sorry for the rant but dissatisfied with new china made bearings stamped on American balers . When you don't get thirty thousand bales out of a baler before it implodes it's bad. I have heard good things from freeman owners but have no access to them. Good luck

We run NH575's now. Used to run Deere 348's but the pickup on the NH is 11 inches wider than the Deere. This makes a big difference for us as we bale a lot of straw behind small grain. The Deere pickup just isn't wide enough to bale behind a 30 foot head. The NH has all it wants behind our 20 foot head with a deflector on the combine. I tried every year at intro and other meetings when I worked at the dealership to get Deere to widen the pickup but they claim the market isn't big enough to change things. They will continue to get left in the dust. I liked the Deere design better with the auger, you can see more of what's going on. Deere requires less power to run. NH has updated the flywheel/PTO clutch design from the 575 models. Just like a combine, no matter the color if tuned correctly, both will make a good bale.

X2 Archery dog. We also run NHs. Our 575s were great balers. We just bought our third BC5070 in 4 years. The first was junk & the second was even worse. We have replaced parts on one year old BC5070s that we didn't replacing on 6 year old, 200k+ bale 575s. We don't have high expectations for number three. If there was a better option we would take it, but we haven't found it. I really hope CNH gets their head out of their backside and starts building a good balers again soon.

We pick up straw from a 36ft header in irrigate barley with a 348.  Sounds like your combine operators need to narrow up the windrow.

Neighbor uses a pair of Freemans.  Real heavy duty balers.  I wouldn't recommend one if you are feeding the bales yourself.  They make a straw bales over 120 lbs.

I've had JD, Hesston and a Case(NH).  The Case 542 is, IMHO the best, Hesston a second and the green a DISTANT third.  E-mail if you want specifics as to my reasoning.

I would recommend buying the high capacity baler. Jd348 or NH 5070. Resale and value would be better. IMO

Great now I am thinking if I go new Holland should.go.used to a 08 or so 575. There is one close with maybe 30000 bales through it and kicker for 16000. I am not worried much about trade or resale as it will be keep most of my farming career only do 7000-10000 bales a year so hope to just buy one and keep it a long while

I love JD balers, I have a 336 and a 348, but the big NH 575's and whatever the new numbers are will simply bale more tons per hour. If conditions are right the MF/Hesston inlines will out bale the NH's even but they need very consistent windrows or they break the pre stuffer shear pins from what everyone tells me.

We ran a 336 years ago and then went to a 348.  It was a big improvement.  We had several 348's and then upgraded to a NH 575 about 10 years ago.  It was a big improvement.  We currently have a NH 5070 which is the same size as the 575 with a few improvements (moved the star wheel back farther which makes the bales more consistant.  Also changed the location of the pickup drive belt to make it easier to change.).  I would not go back to a JD (the last 348 we owned was the biggest lemon due to VERY poor quality control at the factory).

Depends on the model. The 1839 can be pretty fussy about windrows if they're too wide, but that's usually just in grass hay. Otherwise the rest of them should do alright. Keeping the windguard down to help break up the windrow should help.

I would like to know more about moving the star wheel back. Bale with NH and use NH balewagon so consistent is good. Have the chamber extenders.

Barley doesn't bale the volume per acre that wheat does. We're baling over 100 bales to the acre. 1st and 2nd gear in a 4455 powershift. Maybe 3rd if it gets thin. If we cut with a 36 foot head we would need a creeper transmission. We cut it low. So much volume that with the deflectors it has backed up in the walkers and choked everything up. Always looking for another combine operator though.

Kirk,
They moved the wheel back about 6 inches.  This places it above the side tensioners and makes it run smoother (it is farther from the plunger).  You can modify the 575 by lengthening the arm and rebolting the wheel farther back on the chamber.  I'll post a couple of pictures that I found on Fastline.  The first one is the 575 with no modification.  The second is of the 5070:

One thing too I had forgotten about is that on the newer series NH balers, replacing the pickup drive belt is much easier than on the 575 models. Night and day difference. We always keep at least one on hand.
