Subject: proper way to weld auger flighting to shaft

West Central Wisconsin
I am building a cross auger for my strip till bar. I ordered flighting from shoup. The center hole is supposed to fit a 1" shaft but it is pretty loose. Should I use a larger shaft? what is the proper technique to weld the auger flighting?

You can stretch / twist them to make them fit tighter, not any easy task but that will probably snug it up. Watch about welding long beads as it can bow the tube. Most important weld is the top / discharge end.

You need to weld 1 end and then tie a chain and come along on the other and stretch it until the flighting is snug on the shaft. Will probably have hit the flighting with a hammer a time or 2 to help out. Then weld roughly 1" beads at about every 2nd pitch. This is how we usually do it and works out quite well. Good luck

I think the distance between the flights should be the same as the diameter once you have it stretched.

thats only true when the pitch is equal to the diameter, often its not.

The pitch should be the same as diameter or slightly less. If it's more the grain will start turning with the flighting instead of moving forward.

...I never put all the welds on one side of the shaft. I go about 1/3 of the way around the shaft (0r pipe) with each consecutive bead. If you put them on just one side..you'll have a very nice bow to your shaft when they cool.

I made a jig for stretching the new flighting used an old piece of flighting minus the tube about 3 feet long, welded a piece of light angle to each side tied together with a light channel across the bottom. Tack the new flighting at the top, thread on the jig on the bottom use vice grips to attach to new flighting then using a bottle jack between the jig and the auger shaft you could gently/precisely pull the new flighting to a proper fit. The jig is buried in snow and I am a long ways from snow right now, but it worked very nic for me. Replace all the flighting on a Brandt 10 x 60 swing auger.
