From a thread a ways down the page, several people did not have good things to say about NH spreaders... just wondering why? I'm glad I scrolled clear back down to that thread now!

Yongfarmer89 said his neighbor has one and doesn't like it?

One guy I talked to yesterday loves New Idea box spreaders, that is what I have now but it's tiny and about 50 years old, still does a good job though.

We used to run a 195 NH and had no issues with it. We traded it in for a NH 2090. I would consider it about a 700 bu spreader. We have had it for 3 years now and have not had many problems with it. I would not have a problem buying another.

In my area everyone is knight brainwashed. At auction they will buy a 250 knight that is shot ie bad floor bad beater apron chain shot for 3 times as much as a new holland that is field ready.

NH 195 have a good reputation around here. Hold up just fine.

They are well worth the money, I think about 18K gets you a new one. That said they aren't as heavy as a 40K new spreader of other brands, but what do you expect?

Dad has had one for 4 or 5 years. Other than a flat tire has had ZERO issues.

Ive got a mid 90s NH 195 I bought used 4 yrs ago, haul about 100+ loads a yr with it, have done nothing but grease it, been a good spreader. Would love to have a Meyers 750VB but way outa my budget presently, but that will pry be my next spreader.

We have a 195. There's quite a few in this area and they have a good reputation. They are simple and inexpensive. You have to pay lots more to get a spreader with a fancier spread pattern. The previous owner of ours stripped the worm drive ring gear and we once broke a shaft on the beater gearbox, but those were both from sand. The plastic floor looks like it will last a long time. We just changed the chain for the first time.

We have a New Idea and it has been a great spreader. Just wish the beater spun faster and had more paddles as it will clump sometimes. Also use an H&S 310, its is a good spreader too, just a little lighter in some spots, but has a better spread pattern. Neither one has the upper beater, next spreader will have that.

We have a nh 195, have had it for 6 years atleast. Haul 280 loads a year average, lots of road running too. Spreader has been really good to us, a flat tire or two and right now the beater gear box seal has cracked. Its a double beater with the beater pan. Does a really nice job as far as spreading pattern.

Just traded a Gehl 1410 that is exact machine as a NH 195 (7years old) and got along good. Trans. is old fashioned compared to gearbox trans. on 1580 CaseIH had before but it worked. Probably did close to a load per day. Did add a 1/4 x 3 inch strap iron to extend behind rubber on bottom of end gate to keep it from leaking soupy manure.

have run both-I thought the best box spreader was a 1140 knight-I think the 195 held a little more, the 1140 with the double chain and double beater did a nice job-then I thought i should update to bigger spreader-dont know if I get anymore done-and could always pull that 1140 with my 8120jd mfwd-kinda a bread and butter play-load-go-load-go,as more miles became norm went to bigger spreaders-would like to buy a 1140 back just for muddy days andwhen I'm close hauling-and in the summer time the 4020 worked good on it!

Neindiana i know my neithbor has went through a bunch of sprockets in the front. I know he has also had hub issues. He spreads daily when the spreader is working and the cows are in the barn. 10 years ago we bought a 1309 gehl slinger and have been happy with it. Little maintenance. You will never see a box spreader on this farm again. About a week ago I posted pictures of the 8118 knight slinger we bought and like that even more than the gehl.

I've got a NH 195 spreader.   Does everything I ask of it, certainly never had any problems.   I suppose it could be a little bigger, but they are something like 450 bu.  I've found when it comes to machinery, you can always find someone who has something to complain about anything made.

Its not that they're bad spreaders, its just that there are better ones available.

Had a New Holland 518, then got a 679. After the usual broken chains in the winter business (which is going to happen no matter what chaiin spreader you use), we switched to a Hagedorn, and never looked back.

I don't think there bad just not the best for money. When you look again look at the weight I am certain the Kuhn will weigh more for a comparable spreader by 500 lbs or more. Then look them over and find where the extra weight was used. I feel there rugged.

if i added up all my loads that i hauled with my old 679 nh spreaders since 1990 it would be scarey . ive had good luck with nh , but a new kuhn hydro push would be just fine to replace them with today.

the problem with the older New Hollands was they had a U-trough underneath the axle(s) as a shield or somthing and that would fill up with manure and dirt and rust the axle away. my dad bought one from an auction and as he was coming home he went over the railroad tracks and the whole spreader just fell apart. but maybe the new NH's dont have that.

I've seen way too many NH spreaders with the hitch broken in two because they make them so light. We switched to Hagedorn, wouldn't ever bother with anything else again.
