Tell me what i should know about the bobcat 873, its a 2001 with 2100 hrs. Whats the good and the bad? I want it to load chemical shuttles/seed pro boxes in the summer and push snow in the winter. thanks

one of the best skid steers ever built. not as fancy as the newer machines but very tough. deutz engine is excellent just change timing belt every 2000 hrs and it will run for over 15000 hrs before overhaul. you need the two special tools to do it. the rest of machine is good too.

If it is a 2001 it is a G series, which is a great loader with the new style cab

Dieseldoc is correct about the timing belt, I am not sure every 2000 hours isnt plenty often, but it should be done.

i can tell you this. if the timing belt breaks the valves hit the pistons. they are made to hit flat so usually you have to replace some push rods and rocker arms. i would say about 1 out of 20 will bend a valve and if you dont fix it and keep running it chances are it will drop a valve and ruin a piston. engine has no sleeves but you can bore the block and install sleeves. you can get a kevlar timing belt and run it 5000 hrs. the belt only costs like 170 bucks. but the tools to install the belt are around 900. the belts that fail are mostly because an oil leak will get on the belt an you know what oil does to rubber.

What is your oppinion of trading a 873 with 2100 Hrs for a newer 250 with 900 Hrs. Had good luck with 873 and turned into one of the most valuable tools around the operation.

I have an 873g with just 500 hours on it...I believe a 99 model but can't remember for sure. Should I consider changing the timing belt earlier than 2,000 hours given the low hours on the machine?

Thanks.

Chemical totes and pallets of seed can weigh close to 3000 pounds. How big of a SS will it take to raise that much weight?

personally I wouldnt do it. I had a 250 for a while. it would not lift as much as the 873 even tho it was rated for more. the 873 has the whole engine behing the rear wheels and it will lift like crazy. way way more than its rated for. plus I like the deutz engine better than the kubota. the deutz will use considerably less fuel. also on the 250 if it has a door on the front the lift arms have to be all the way down to get out of the cab. dont get me wrong the 250 is an awesome loader I just tend to lean twords the 873 as long as they are a g series. If you want to sell that 873 let me know. I have two. one has 14000 hrs and the other has 9200 so i would be interested in getting another one.

873G will lift that and not even think about it.

I would pull the plastic cover on the corner of the belt. rotate engine around and check for oil on it or cracks in the belt. If not run it if so change it. you will change the belt and the idler together. not sure were you are located but I have the special tools to do it. they cost about 900 bucks for the tools. or your dealer will charge 800 to change it wich is a ripoff because it only takes an hour to do it.
