SW Minnesota | How well have these little tractors been, any big problems with them?? Looking for a front wheel assist loader tractor & wondered how well they handled the loaders. Will I have problems lifting 2000 lb bales?? Do they have left hand shuttle reversers?? or should I just keep looking at maxxum tractors, let me know your thoughts.

We run a 6410, 6415, 6320. And have had only the smallest of problems. They have been very reliable tractors that are comfortable for their size. Ours all have left hand reversers with the 16 or 24 power quad. It is a good chore transmission. While we never work with bales ours easily handle 2500+lb bulk totes with rear ballast.

NEMO | My 6410 has been rock solid. Great loader tractor and I have no problem stacking bales woth it. Not all had the LH reverser but the RH ones work ok. Only JD tractor I have ever owned but based on its reliability it probally won't be my last.

East-Central Ontario | Our 6400 has about 17,000 hours on it now, the loader's never been off it. It's just about done for though. Only major work we've ever done has been two front end jobs ($$$) but it'll soon need a motor and transmission job and the loader's worn out so we replaced it with a 6420. We've lifted two 1800 lb wet bales with it all the time, and a ton and a half of bagged fertilizer. Thus the worn out loader but that took a lot of work to do.

Wheatley, Arkansas | Away from them! We run all Deere tractors, have a 6400 and a 6420 headed to the sale now. I hope I never have another one of these money pits again. The 6400 with 7000 hours has not been as bad as the 6420 with 1700 hours. The repair bills on the 6420 this year have been over $8500. Electrical, and drive train problems being the main concerns. These little tractors are fine when they're well; ours just stay sick all the time. I don't know yet what will replace them but it won't be another German built tractor. Les

Thunder Bay, Ontario, Great White North | Have a 6410 with 4000 hours, nice to run, decent cab, we have a 640 loader on ours, about 1/2 the hours are either unloading silos or packing bunker silos. LH reverse sure nice for packing silos. We've chewed up one front planetary, had some issues with the loader control valve, fuel pump changed, alternator gone bad, and put a tree through the rad (not the tractors fault, however) certainly not 100% trouble free, but not that horrid either. I have noticed it is maxed out in cooling capacity, baling in 95* temps, the rad needs to be cleaned regularly or the tractor will run hot/ac gets lazy. All in all, I'd buy another if in the market, most of the hours on ours were put on by myself and the cab/seat are good, makes long days not so hard on the body. Good tractor IMHO.

ECIL | We've got a 2wd 6300, without a cab, and a 640 loader. With rear weight, we can move a 66 bag pallet of soybeans, but barely. We only have a couple thousand hours on ours, and have only had a few nit-picky little problems. In the state of Illinois there are a lot of JD 6400-6420's mowing state and county highways, so they must not be too bad of tractors.

East-Central Ontario | THAT was what I forgot. THe 6400 originally had a two-speed fan for cooling. Didn't work worth a darn so they replaced it with a single high-speed fan. Still has never cooled very well but it was also putting out 112 hp from the factory instead of 85, still the 6000s and 6010s never stayed cool and the 6420 is only slightly better.

Lincoln County. NC | spr352 - 12/1/2007 17:04 In the state of Illinois there are a lot of JD 6400-6420's mowing state and county highways, so they must not be too bad of tractors. Municipal tractors are seldom bought on quality; often on price. Manufacturers suck up to large municipal fleet bids, there's tons of exposure that can't be bought in print ads. Your post proves the point.

ECIL | That's not always the case, if it was, there would probably be more Agco equipment. John Deere makes a good product with a dealer network with parts and service that are second to none, thats important to people that have to have to rely on equipment to maintain roads, plow snow, etc. In our area all the road graders, high-hoes, and end loaders that the county, and township use are all Deere. I doubt it's because they are cheap, I suspect it's because Martin Equipment of Illinois is a good organization with a stronge presence in the area......no, the advertisement value never hurts either.

I think the state leases the tractors, not buy them. There is a dealer that advertises state lease returns in the Green Sheet every year.

ECIL | I am sure that's the case in Illinois as well. Sloan Implement, which is a large multiple location JD dealership, gets 6400 size tractors that come off of state leases and resells them to farmers. There are several of the 6400, 6420's around. People are using them as modern replacements for 4020's.

Callao Missouri | I really like our 6400, we have around 5000+ hrs on the clock. It has not been trouble free but has been a very good tractor, and very operator friendly. You will be impressed with the engine if you are going to do any heavy work with it. Ours will out compete our 1066 IH on a 15' brush hog most of the time. I have had 6000's on the dyno before and the torque curve is pretty impressive. Our 6400 had a plastic splice that connects the lube tube from the manifold and distributes it to the rt final drive brake. Every 6000, and every small frame 7000 has it ours was just a fluke deal that it broke. I don't know when it broke but I do remember where I was at when the pinion shaft tried to lock up, I had to replace the ring and pinion gear set, along with re bearing the rt final drive. One thing that will kill the power shift and reverser transmission in theses tractors is water in the hydraulic oil. Make sure you trans vent is clean and has the extension kit on it. Also change the trans oil every now and then. I have had to replace the friction disks in the powerquad of a customer 6300, it however is a very simple job to do. Also these tractors tend to run warm if you let your radiator get full. I have extra air spaces blocked off around the radiator so everything has to go threw the screen in front of it, and just pull the screen and dump it off every day when brushhoging or pushing haylage it only takes a second to do. We have a westendorf loader on our 6400 and I would never stoop down to a Deere loader for various reasons, mainly they just don't lift high enough and are hard to take on and off. We also have the RT hand reverser control, I would not want a left hand because as you get out you could catch your pliers on the left hand control and put it in motion. My mind is made up! Would we get a 6400 again if we know now what we new then, absolutely! I for see our 6400 being around here for a long time, if we get another it will be a 6410. I agree with the other poster that said run like mad from the 6420 I had enough of them at the dealership to never want one now. Altho I am sure most people are happy with thier 6x20 tractors. Eastern Ontario | We have a 6400 4wd,pq, cab no loader about 8000 hrs. It's been a good strong tractor but not trouble free. Right now the third gear doesn't work(seen a few with that problem around here, mainly first ones that came out). The P.T.O clutch was done in it and we did some work on the hydraulic pump. I really like the motor in it and we are still going to keep it for a while >
