It's been 40 years since I worked on one of those things! I would take it apart and make sure all the pivot points work like new. If I remember, the operator's manual is a good one and you will need one. I have an AC friend who has one I think but he is in Fla. I know some guys who used these a long time and grew very good notill crops. I hope someone on here responds with more details.

A cheap planter can cost you more money than it saves you in purchase price. If it can't be put in top condition, the yield loss can buy a better one really quickly.

It's a good simple no till planter. It's basic and doesn't compare to some of the newer stuff but will plant a crop and do a reasonable job of it. Are the drive chains flat or bicycle type? Are the units air? Do the have the side depth wheels on them? They had a ton of different types of plates for the unit, and as well you can use JD 71 unit planter plates. It requires a plastic adapter hub for the plate to set in. Some parts are available from shoup and I believe Sloan. The JD double disc fertilizer blades can be used instead of the AC blades and hubs, they are heavier. You would be doing yourself a big favor by pulling the no till coulter hubs off and repacking and installing new seals. I believe shoup sells the kit for those hubs that includes both bearings, cones, and the seal for about $13. Ask away. I have a lot of parts for these planters, plates AC and JD with adapters, down preasure springs, boxes, etc. It will make for a good cheap starter planter. O by the way..... Find a set of markers off of something and adapt them.... Anything.

South Central Ky
You can put two barrels of water on the toolbar, and plant across the blacktop highway. Worse thing we had with ours(35 years ago) was the flat chains and it didn't lift very high in transport.

The row units have a double disc opener ahead of a "runner" or shoe?. The air units ,78s were the best, plateless, double disk opener, with a set of wheels that could be added for depth control, had those on and also ran alittle press wheel in behind the openers. If u have the runner style with the disk openers works pretty well in notill but digs ruts in worked ground. We also have units that are plate, u adjust depth with a threaded crank, probabluy late 60s that came out. Can u get a picture?

We have a 333 notil special with 78 air units on it, liquid fertilizer, still plant all our corn with it. Still plants well. Did add shaeffer rebounders and no till v closing wheels, helps cover seed ahead of the big packing wheel in notill situations

+1 on the Shaffert rebounders! They do a very good job on the AC planter. And allow you to put down starter in furrow. Biggest thing on the metering side is to make sure the spring on the roller arm has tension and the roller rolls free. Spray a light coat of dry film graphite on the plate and the housing. Not slip plate. Msc, Mcmaster Carr, fastenal etc sell it. Comes in a spray can and atmomizes really fine and goes on smooth.

Had one when I started farming on my own, my dad and grandad bought it new sometime in the 70's. They will penetrate and plant just fine, the trouble I had was closing the trench with that big wheel on the back. If you can adapt it to the closing wheels like the newer planters have, it will do fine. It wasn't so bad when seed was cheap and we could save our own but I wouldn't want to take the chance of not covering well now.
