Subject: 8830 Ford power shift

western Ky
I just bought a 8830 Ford (6000 hr)that needed some seals and PTO brake replaced. I have the tractor torn down and found that the torque clutch has been replaced and the input shaft and gear splines have over 50% of splines worn. The tractor shifts a little hard on up shifts. I checked most pressures at the test ports and they are good .I calibrated the trans and F1-81, F2-91 ,R-85. Will the hard up shift cause the splines to ware, anything mechanical inside the power shift to cause hard up shift? I trying to decide if I need to split the power shift . Thanks

That trans should shift fairly smooth with the exception of 9-10. If it does not, something else is wrong, like a faulty modulating valve or something like that. Are the pressure calibration numbers within the acceptable range? Are you calibrating it EXACTLY the way the manual states?

Spline wear is a pretty normal thing on Ford's in general with those hours or less...
It's more normal for the PTO drive hub to be worn than the main... I'm not really familair with how that one is set up connected to the Funk... but I don't think I'd get too excited. Replace the worn parts, calibrate the transmission and forget it. I'd wager that you'll probably go through the calibration once or twice to get a better idea how it works before you get it right. Make sure the oil is warmed up or at least at the temp specified as well...

I have a Ford manual and it states that at 91 on any clutch calibration , it will flash error low and stop the calibration and show code EL ,mine on F2 went to 92 and it calibrated with no codes .Can the modulating valves be repaired? I halve talked to several mechanic at local dealerships and they say if it calibrates it is good to go I'm just trying to get more opinions if I need to split the power shift and look at clutch ware or any other mechanical problems wile I have the tractor split. Thanks

I calibrated it 3 times it did shift a little smoother, before it almost felt like it would pop the front wheels up thanks

Bern can give you a lot more specific info on that transmission than I can... but if it's popping the front wheels up I'd say that's a lot too rough. I think I would make a point of doing the calibration with the oil at working temperature tho...

I did let it warm up it didn't actually pop up the front wheels you just got the feeling it was, I hope I am explaining that right, after I cal it it was better . I wish I was more familiar with power shift. Thanks
