Central Indiana
Does anyone know if the transmission and Differentials on an IH 3588 will hold up to being turned up to 200 hp?

Sort of Central to North Central Iowa
Have one, would not recommend it. Ours at 175-180. Had to add an intercooler and muffler eliminator to get rid of the heat at that HP. I think 200 would be too much for the drive train over time. Think of it as a 175hp fwa not a 200 hp fwd. Just my opinion.

The front end on those tractors is a weak spot . They are known to fail in a heavy draft situation.

Don't. A small v8 Cummins or Cat Stieger/Versy or the 4366 would be a better choice than turning up the 3588. We have run both the 555 Cummins powered Stieger built AC 440 and 3588.

1) Buy a 3588 at auction for dirt cheap, like under 10k
2) Pull the screw out of the pump, dual up the rear axle, fill all rear tires with fluid.
3) Pull, baby, pull!
4) See how long it lasts, then scrap it.

Thanks for the imput, I think I will keep it at about 175. Can't afford to just run it and trash it, i'm small and operating on a shoestring budget.

I hear you on the small operations. I just want to convince one person to do it so I can see the results.

Our 3588 is also set around 180-185. It's got an intercooler and muffler eliminator as well.

Depends on what you intend to do with it... There was one around here that had the screw let out to make a LOT of smoke. It was a tractor of many problems but I don't believe any of them were the result of power. It was also a tractor that did mainly PTO work on a forage harvester and manure spreader. It pulled... but not like heavy draft on a plow kind of pulling...
So... I'd say if you want a blend of PTO and drawbar power simultaneously it will probably be fine. If you intend to drive all of that power fully through one or the other you're for certain going to have problems.

i have a 3588 has a 3lm turbo on it and an inline bosch injection pump off of a case power unit. it has been way over 200 hp for 8 years. duals on all 4 corners. did have to put a ta in once. i pull a 25ft disk and 9 shank disk chisel with mine. everybody gives them a hard time but i like mine.as far as i am concerned they are cheap power.have had 5 of them through the years and have never had much trouble out of them. got a tile plow on mine now.its a little light for that though.there are some guys on here that have seen mine and can confirm all this also
