Subject: JD 690b Information

Guelph, Ontario
As I posted the other day we recently purchased a JD 690b excavator.
I have a couple of questions for the experienced operators.
When I flip the switch to go from slow to fast on the track drive there is a delay. Is this normal?
There is a fairly fast internal leak in the dipper circuit. Would you suspect the cylinder packing or the control valve?

Central Il Morton
Normal for the 2 speed at least on mine.
Can't help you on the dipper leak.

you can isolate the problem to the cylinder or valve by opening the bucket, put the stick 90 degrees to the ground and lower the boom....Remove a hose to the lift pressure side of the boom cylinders, and plug the hose or fitting on the cylinder side of the fitting...Close the bucket while extending the stick and you will see if the cylinders are bypassing.

Ours has always had a bit of delay when switching to rabbit. As for the stick problem, I'd suspect cylinder problems first based on our experience. We've had a few cylinder problems and no valve troubles over almost 20 years, but they have all been external leaks or cracks.

SW Ohio
delay is normal...i usually stop when switching speeds but probably don't need to.

I would guess cylinder packing but TROUBLE SHOOT IT before you rip it apart!

how ya liking it by now?

Haven't been able to use it yet.
Bought it knowing it was needing work. (pretty well scrap price)
Kind of like the idea of an engine model that I was familiar with.
Previous owner installed new track chains less than 150 hours ago.
Have a big job yet rebuilding the bottom/rear of cab.
