Subject: Need help locating JD 4440 hyd. leak!

Have a JD 4440 quad range. Over the summer I noticed a small hydraulic leak dripping on the front end(left hand side if sitting in seat). Well the other day it seemed to have really let loose when I was unloading hay as fluid was really running out of it. looked at main hydraulic line that goes from near battery box to front of tractor (in pump) and it's dry. Leak has to be under fuel tank. Started tractor today and let it warm up for a good 25 minutes or so and see no evidence of a leak. The tractor lost a fair amount of Fluid when this happend the other day, so I'm not sure why it's not leaking anymore. I figure as bad as it was running out, it would leak right away. Any thoughts? Thanks.

There is a small elbow that comes out of the hydraulic pump and has a hard plastic line that runs back to the transmission. I believe it's called the pump drain line but am probably wrong on the name. This plastic line commonly dries out and cracks and begins leaking. It goes from the pump and runs along the side frame and has hose and barb fittings at the ends.
Good Luck!

Probably a steering line that rusted thru, turn the wheel back and forth and see if it leaks.

Isn't the line your talking about on the right side of the machine?

Most common one we see on the 4440's is a small elbow fitting up in front of the top of the radiator. it has a check valve ball in it I think and a small hose barb pressed into the side of the main L casting. This small hose barb which is for a plastic drain line will pull out or shake loose so it leads oil down over the radiator. Lift up hood and see if there's oil up high on the radiator.

If no oil up there, maybe like was said earlier steering motor/cylinder plug might leak or maybe the main pump itself.

Found the cure for that pressed in hose barb on my 4440. Put a good coating of JB weld around where barb is pressed in on new replacement before installation. Finally stopped my problems with this fitting by doing this. Replaced that rascal twice before finally doing this.

Eastern Ontario

There are a couple of oil lines that go through the casting under the fuel tank. Open the side screens and remove the flat covers around the hydraulic pump. There is likely a bunch of dirt filling the compatment. Clean it all out. Then look at the oil lines. They are hard to see. I think you may even see them from below the frame.  These are steering lines and may not leak if not used.
