South Central Wi.
I have a 4850 Deere 2wd, 200hp just wondering how many shanks it will pull.

What type of soil, how deep do you want to run, and what type of shovels or shanks?

Sand to loam to heavy clay all in the same field, curved shovels 6 to 8 inches deep.

11 would be plenty IMO. Would run out of traction. We have a 13 shank IH that has been stripped to 9 and it is all i want in our heavy clay with an 8210. Going 10+ inches deep though. 2 in straight points.

I think a 9 shank with cutting disks would be about right.

We pulled an 11 shank Hiniker disc/chisel with a 4840 in heavy soils and it handled it alright, usually 4th gear in the power-shift. I don't recall the model of the tillage tool, but it would have been made in the mid-late 80's. Then we got a 4955 MFWD and pulled an 11 shank 6650 Case/IH (which is identical to a Glencoe SS7400) and that was all that tractor wanted.

My point is, I do not think the 4840 would've handled the 11 tooth Case/Glencoe soil saver very well at all because it has auto reset shanks with much higher tooth trip pressure. The Hiniker was like a lot of those chisel plows you see from the 80's with the double upright spring assembly and whenever you get into hard ground, tough conditions or drove too fast they just spring back, whereas the other machine would keep the teeth at the desired depth. The newer Case/Glencoe machine pulled harder. Also, we aimed for a minimum of 8 inches.

9 shank if it something like the Case/IH 6650 or Glencoe SS 7400. Otherwise, you might try an 11 tooth.

9 would be good 11 only if you want the ride of your life. Back in the day used a 4840 fully weighted over 225hp. drop chisel slam into steering wheel tires grip and bite slammed almost out the rear window. Took 2 shank's off and that worked better.

I'm going to say 9 is the max any 2wd tractor can pull well unless it is weighted to the hilt. I don't care what the smake screw is set at 160 horse power seems to be about all you can get to the ground.

We pull a 7 with our 2wd 4850. It used to get pulled with a 4430 and we just never got a bigger one. The 4850 plays with that 7 shank most of the time. I'd look for a 9 or 11 shank.

NW Central Ohio
Go for a 9 shank...and you'll get more speed, which will translate into better residue coverage. Traction shouldn't be a problem with the right size tires. My 7230 will pull my 9 shank Krause disc chisel at 4.6-5.2 MPH and it has MFWD and 18.4-46 duals. It actually has so much traction that in good conditions I'm tempted to turn off the front wheel assist, because the slippage meter usually runs lower than what they consider to be most efficient.

I would say 9 is also the max. We pull a 7 shank with 3" straights, and that's all our Case 2590 2 WD (about 190 horse) wants. Like others say, it just spins. NW Ohio, heavy clay.

I have a 11 Shank Case IH 6650/Glencoe SS7400 and pulled it in Minnesota clay hills with an John Deere 8640 (275 hp) that had all it wanted with 4" twisted points at 10" deep. Had to run B-1 or A-3 to pull on the hills, 3.5-5.5 mph. For the first five years it lived as a 9 shank behind a Massy 1805 (200 hp).
We used it 3 years behind our John Deere 8960 (370 hp) and now bought a John Deere 510 5 shank.
Disc chisels have there place and where I am is not one of them.

Deere7000, I wish our ground was that flat.
Our 8640 would handle a 13 shank no problem.
