Subject: Case IH 7120 Transmission

Canada
I have a 1992 7120 with the 4 speed reverse trans. I am having 2 problems. First when I shift from neutral to either 1 or 2 reverse the tractor will move back about 2 feet even with the clutch pressed. Second problem I can't shift into 3 or 4 reverse. If I force it and get it into 3 or 4 the tractor won't move. It seems like it is still locked in park. Any help is much appreciated.

It sounds to me like your speed linkage is mis-adjusted. When you move the lever from side to side in neutral, it shouldn't move. Try this, release the clutch and move to forward neutral. Does the tractor move and the dash shows forward 1st gear? If so you just need to adjust the cable a little bit. As far as the 3 and 4 reverse is concerned, you have to come out of park and go all the way to neutral before you select 3 or 4 reverse. You can't go from park directly to 3 or 4 reverse.

Thanks Virginia Veg. Yes I know about going to neutral before 3 or 4 reverse. The only way I can get 3 or 4 is to reach between the shifter and manually hold the park linkage back to neutral. Any thoughts??

Man Jeff,

I just don't know what to tell you. I can't remember what it looks like under there. I had to put a new F-N-R cable on our 8950 in April, but I can't picture it in my head right now. I need to adjust it sometime because ours is difficult to get any of the reverse gears. I got the cable a little too far adjusted one way. I might take the cowl off tomorrow, if it rains tonight, and I'll get back to you. There is a little cable that pulls the machine out of park when you pull the lever back, but if I understand you correctly, the tractor is only giving trouble when you try to get reverse? Anyway, I'll attach a picture of the park cable, could this be presenting a problem?

Part #1 is the item I was referring to pulling back to get into 3 or 4 reverse.
