Subject: John Deere S series Combines

n/c iowa

ALLRIGHT GUYS , TELL ME THE TRUTH, I HAVE NEVER OWNED ANYTHING BUT A GREEN COMBINE AS LONG AS I HAVE FARMED, EVERTHING ELSE I HAVE IS GREEN, EXCEPT FOR A DISK RIPPER AND A SELF PROPELLED SPRAYER. I RECENTLY TOOK DELIVERY ON A S680 COMBINE. AFTER MAKING NO MORE THAN 2 HALF MILE ROUNDS WITH IT, I WAS VERY DISAPPOINITED. THE COMBINE HAS A MUCH HIGHER NOISE LEVEL THAN IT'S BROTHER(9870STS), AND DOES NOT HAVE AS CLEAN OF A SAMPLE IN THE GRAIN TANK,(NEVER MIND THAT IS SHORT ON POWER), MY QUESTION TO ALL OF YOU OTHER JOHN DEERE "S" SERIES OWNERS IS, DO YOU THINK THAT JOHN DEERE HAS IMPROVED THEIR COMBINE, OR, ARE WE GOING BACKWARDS?????? THE CAB IS WONDERFUL(RIGHT UP TO THE POINT THAT YOU START THE ENGINE) THE REFRIGERATOR WORKS EXCELLENT, AND THE TERVIS TUMBLER WITH THE JOHN DEERE LOGO IS AWESOME. I HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED TO JOHN DEERE FOR QUALITY AND INNOVATION, BUT, THIS TIME I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. PLEASE REPLY WITH AN HONEST ANSWER, DID I JUST GET A LEMON(EVERY COMPANY BUILDS ONE ONCE AND A WHILE) OR DO YOU SHARE THE SAME THOUGHTS?

We aren't an owner of an s series thankfully. Demoed one in the fall and wasn't impressed at all. Nice cab but loud! Had an 8 row chopping on it and the salesman claimed that the head was the noisy part. Switched with our ol 9660sts with a 12 row none chopping and the 60 was still quiter.

Heavy steering was the other major complaint I had.

Once they get the bugs out of it I'm sure they will be good machines!

Sorry to hear about your complaints on the new S Deere. Our new to us S77 Gleaner seems to have an abundance of power, operating it is as fun as playing a video game. Sample is really clean, although havent harvested any soybeans yet, cant wait. Beans will be going here in the next couple days.

Have not used my S680 yet but the door will not close just moving it around the yard. A friend has the same problem with a S680.

I guess when they fall 600 units behind schedule quality control suffers.

The noise is caused by the bad doors, I'm told there is a PIP to replace them. I put close to 400 hrs on a 680 this fall. I shelled over 41,000 bushels of corn in one day without turning my lights on. I averaged over 180 acres a day for several days in a row in 70 bpa soybeans, in some terribly muddy conditions. I cut 225 bpa rice at 4 mph with a 35' header. In all this I had a total of 2 hrs downtime, and that was probably my fault for not checking the beater belt tensioner. I've been pretty critical of Deere in recent years, but in my opinion they have knocked one out of the park with these combines. Sounds like you've got some problems, but don't give up on it.
BTW, I'm not talking it up just to try to rationalize a purchase, we don't own this machine.

I have noticed a up and down quality issue with a lot of Deeres stuff. Please do not think that I am trashing on Deere but the crappy work on some or most of the stuff, and not to mention the sales people that do not want to work with you. We had that issue this year and we ended going with a Case and buying a new tractor when we wanted a green one, but for some reason they did not want to come off the price. The dealership switched owners about 2 years ago, but we have been dealing with Deere for over 75 years. WE ALL KNOW THAT DEERE CAN MAKE GREAT WORKING MACHINES, but they need to step back take a deep breath and regroup and start making the machines like we are use to FUNCTIONAL. SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOU HAD A BAD PURCHASE FROM DEERE. THE PRICES NEED WORK TOO THEY NEED TO COME DOWN A LOT, A LOT WAY DOWN.

It was a spring loaded tensioner, I just let it get too loose. This was the morning Isaac hit and we had been working it like a rented mule for several days and not spending a lot of time on maintenance.

boy you got a lemon i think, mine, s680, has a ton of capacity over my 9870. power allows 3500-5000bph at high speeds with a 12 row stalkmaster head. im not sure how, i know the fuel tank is only 25gal bigger, but i can run all day on 3/4 of a tank. 9870 was flashing at me by the 12th hour. yet it says on the gee-wiz it burns more?????? took me a half a round to clean up the sample of cobs.
i think you need to get on your dealer, the motor in mine cant be heard at all, but its a real late one, like aug build. maybe it is the door? now the cab mounts squeaking is another story, but told theres a pip for after fall.....
had a few things not right from factory, but very pleased now....nice to have a machine with plenty of capacity for once

Tip of the Thumb of Michigan

I fear we won't get any deals or outstanding quality until dealer lots are full of new inventory.  If we keep buying, then pretty good is good enough for any major manufacturer.

Maybe it's you?  What I mean is, if you run your combine like you run your keyboard, that explains a lot.

TJ farmer, how do you not have high rotor loss doing 3500 to 5000 bph? We have a S680 also and still get rotor loss just like the 9870 did. What are your settings? The cab is very nice but it is much louder than the old one. I'll be glad when the pip comes out for the cab mounts.

Deere is so far behide in combines that they move 200 works from the planter plant to help. So maybe you can plant and combine at the same time.

With all the complaints of a loud cab,......just one question did Deere move the engine back to it's original location?

Our S660 has been pretty impressive so far and very impressed with the capacity and job is does. It is quieter than the 70 series that it replaced, both inside the cab and outside. I have no complaints yet.

A little reading in other threads would suggest there is a door seal repair/upgrade that needs to be done.

Our 680's are great. Only had them three days. We are doing at 6 acres a hour more with them than the 9770's they replaced with the same headers. Big capacity jump for us in soybeans. Cab is maybe a little louder but I think it is more you are hearing different things. Everyone loves the touch screen. Think I might have to order FD for next year.
