Subject: round bale wrappers

South East South Dakota/winters Tucson, AZ
Is anyone using an Anderson single bale wrapper? If not any suggestions on a brand preference? I have done a search in the archives and any new preferences?

My neighbor has an H&S. He loves the thing. It is an inline wrapper. He wraps about 1000 to 1500 a year with it.

We use a Tubeline, my son does a little custom baling. One guy he bales for has a single wrapper he said he could wrap about 40 bales a day so it is kind of slow. I think a inline wrapper is cheaper to operate and faster as well. FWIW

I borrowed one once, a 3 pt type and it took about a minute to wrap a bale after you got to it and backed under it. So, not that slow. Can't tell you the brand, it's been a long time.

Maybe if you move them off the field after you wrap them, that would take longer. Might be able to wrap while moving toward wherever you are putting them?

we have a Tanco i think 580s automatic.Have had it about 4 years . Not one problem. About 1 min. + wrapping time. WE think and others do too we make 10$ every bale we wrape. Less leaf loss/no rained on hay. If baled too wet might not be able to feed in cold weather. More palitable then dry hay . We like it 35% moisture if possible. Have baled much wetter and dryer. One of our best investments.

We had an older Kuhn I bought for $4500 and used for one year. We sold it and then bought a slightly used McHale for $9500. McHale wrappers are heavier frame than others. A 4x5 or 5x5 bale of wet hay is very heavy and you can break or bend the frame/lift arm on the wrapper. McHale makes an excellent wrapper.

We pickup all of our bales with a bale spear and haul them to one location. There we unload them with a skid steer using a bale spear. we line up the bales about 5 feet apart and then wrap them. When done we swap the spear for a bale clamp and stack the bales 3 high.

Even if you don't stack the bales having the attachment that puts bales on end is a must. There is more plastic on the ends of the bales which reduces the holes in plastic compared to being stored on the side. Try not to move the bales except right after wrapping since the squeezing of the bale allow air inside the plastic which promotes bacteria growth.

We sell about 1/3 of our baleage so a single bale wrapper works best for us. A tube wrapper requires a relatively flat, smooth and long area. If you use a tube wrapper it's best if you are feeding at least one if not two bales per day so that the face of the exposed bale doesn't grow to much bacteria. Our neighbors with tube wrappers will have lots of spoiled bales every year. We have almost no spoilage. If you sell bales out of a tube wrapper other than the dead of winter they need to get used right away or they spoil. Most of the tube wrappers here are Anderson.

You can probably wrap more bales in a day with an inline wrapper than a single wrapper. We will bale and wrap only 20 bales tomorrow after racking 4 windrows into one because that's what little hay there is due to the lack of rain. Hauling and wrapping the bales will take about the same amount of time as the baling.

Good luck.

I'd recommend a Kverneland/Taarup if you can find a used one. If going new, they are now made by Kuhn. Excellent machines. Had a trailed model for over 10 years and had very few issues with it. Now running 2 trailed sq. bale models that can also do 4x4 rounds. Each has over 40k bales and again, very few issues. Absolutely the most reliable machines we have on the farm.

Edit: Forgot to add that we had an Anderson 780SB individual wrapper for a year before we went to the 2nd sq. bale wrapper. It did an ok job on rounds, piece of crap for squares.

We have a Kverneland 3pt that does great service. Made a little "tipper" to fetch the bales from it and dump them onto their flat ends. As of September last year, the wrapper did 38000 bales and all we've ever done, is to grease it. Using tall rolls of wrap (750 mm) we can do about 280-300 bales in a good day (starting at 08:00 and going until 18:00 with an hour break for lunch). Using small rolls (500 mm) we do about 200-220.
