South East MN | Hey just lookin for the good and bad of John Deere 500 and 510 round balers. Lookin into one for baling 30 acres just tired of horse trading with the neighbor and would like one of my own. Any help you can give would be great! Thanks!

Culbertson, MT | The 510 was as good as most at the time. We had one for quite a few years, and liked it OK. But, I wouldn't have it back! If you have JD on the brain, step up to a 530. Advances aside, they are the predecesor to the current JD line and would serve you well.

West Central, IL | Everyone one here will run them down. I have a 510 that I rent to a friend. He said that they work better in a long stem grass, and not so much in short loose stuff (but he doesn't mind running it). I put new upper belts on it and painted it this year. I would like to sell it and maybe get a net wrap one. If your interested, I don't think you will find one much nicer then mine.

Pittstown, NJ | Remember that it won't like high-moisture material for wrapping. In dry hay, it should do the job on 30 acres. I use an old Hesston 5500 on about as many acres. Sometimes when you ask a question like this on NAT, you will be overwhelmingly advised that you need the biggest, most expensive overkill you can find to do it 'right'. Or the other favorite line 'just hire it done'.

SW Kansas | +1! Either would be just fine for 30 acres.

I had an uncle that had a 510 and a friend that had a 500. The biggest complaint I heard from both was that pickup sorta ran down hill towards the front, so you had ZERO floatation when you hit a rock. I always thought the bottom floor belt on a 500 was kinda Mickey Mousey, but it seemed to work.

PEEDEEinSC | Find yourself a 435 or a 535 cheap and good balers

If you can afford it, 530 or 535's are getting cheap, and be way better than a 510. 510 had 4" belts that like to get twisted if you didn't feed it just right. If you get a 510, hopefully it will have the wide belts on the outside. Edited by mac4440 8/4/2012 00:55
