Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND
A really good idea that was kind of badly done. Great traction without hanging a ton of weights over the front, they placed the engine up there to load the front axle. They suffer from a lot of little mechanical troubles and hydraulic leaks. Some parts are getting hard to get like hydraulic pumps, driveline dampers etc.
I owned a 3788 for a few years.

Subject: Had a 3388

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
It was good at putting the power to the ground. Good engine. Bad Transmission. (like all 86 series) It had the cruddy T/A and the backwards opening door. It also came complimentary with the transmission that will get into two gears at once. Once on the highway it wouldn't straighten out after a right hand turn, that was kind of not so nice to go into the woods. I think some check valve got stuck. It was a little odd being on the back part of the pivot, but not altogether bad. I'd only consider one if it is cheap cheap cheap. As in disposable. There not fun to work on, but what is? Its basically getting to be an old tractor, thats all. We gave ours to the harvest crew. I think the doors are missing now which solved the backwards opening problem. It is fast on the highway, actually too fast , for the worn out thing, but it pulls good. which is its primary task anyway. On a funny note, it has the hood on roller tracks. Good idea. very easy to get to. One day one of the guys was showing off and drove up near the gas pump real fast and stopped abruptly. the hood must not have been latched because it rolled right off and flipped upside down onto the ground. It was one of the more amusing sights I recall while standing in front of the shop. If you stare at it. the poor ardvark has an amazing resemblance to the mx magnum, except for the smaller front tires.

Subject: A lousy execution of a great concept

West Union, Illinois

This ought to be in a FAQ section.  It seems to come up every month or two.  The 2 + 2 was a lousy execution of a great concept.  I think IH was finally getting the bugs out when Case bought them and trash canned the whole thing.

So keep this in mind.  The 2 + 2 is a tractor produced by a company that someone else bought off the folks that bought them.  For the most part it is fairly common parts, but there are going to be some NLA.

Basically a 2 + 2 is like an old Jeep or an English motorcycle.  It is guaranteed to leak something someplace.  Guaranteed.

Subject: Somewhat better execution

Pittsburg, Kansas

A somewhat better execution of a similar idea is the White 4-175, 4-210 and several other models. The cab was on the front half instead of the rear but still kind of the same light, nimble 4wd articulated "row crop" concept. Weak points were the drivelines and the v-8 cat engines (and a few other minor annoyances). Although many of us never had any problems with the engines, they had a severely tarnished reputation and I think caused people to shy away from them. Deere tried the idea in the 8430, 8630-40-50 series but ended up with a bastardized articulated 4wd that was too heavy and lumbering to be a row crop tractor, though it tried and not really a very good attempt at a real big tractor 4wd because of lack of power. I think White came as close to anyone of "getting it right" but like many of their products it was an "almost" and ended up with enough weak points and weak company that they never took off. If Deere would have done something like the 4-175 instead of the 8430 everyone might be driving articulated tractors today instead of the monster MFWD's. I think that is a bit of agricultural history where we screwed up. Those were really neat tractors for their day.

In my opinion - I'm sure others may disagree.

NEWTON, IL (SE IL.)
Depends entirely on what you intend to use it for. Great for pulling no-till equipment if you don't mind a very uncomfortable cab. (Just like any of the 86 series)
Not a substitute for a 4 x 4 tractor.
Worked great for us in riverbottom to cross the sandbars.

I wouldn't touch it with a ten, no, make that a twenty foot pole!!!!! I had a 6788. One pulling SOB but the steering would wear you out. Just not worth it if you plan on using all day, day in and day out. Great for hauling manure on wet ground and stuff like that. Plowing all day with an on-land plow....I still have nightmares and wake up in a cold sweat and thank God that I now have a 8940.

North central Missouri.
Thank you all kindly. Using a neighbors on a grain cart and like the way it handles it. Being old and leaking pretty much describes most of my equipment.:) Put a seal kit in a steering cylinder. Not a bad as it looked. Looks like cheap horsepower if you don't mind a few quirks.
