Alberta, Canada | I started cutting hay today and after 2hrs my Cih 3309/ New Idea 5209 disc mower just quit. I knew it wasn't going to be good as this thing has been pretty close to flawless in 20 years. Found that the input shaft broke inside the gear box where a gear slides on to a keyway. I can see why it broke there as that would be a weak spot where they machined the key to fit in the shaft. They updated it on later models to having splines where the shaft slides into the gear. Finland, up there in north where noboby farms! | I have, but whit Kuhn mower, did same thing. Parts guy said it was first on ( well they always do ), I never had same issue again.

waterford ohio | I have seen alot of 5209s with twisted input shafts, just sold one.

SW Wisconsin | A few years ago my Agco dealer told me that I should loosen the slip clutch on my 5212 every spring to make sure it hasn't froze up, guess he knew what he was talking about. I've never done it but I think I may before I cut 3rd crop!

Alberta, Canada | Actually the local dealer has sold one before, also they use the same shaft on the 12 foot model. Ironically the crop was light unlike last season, when it happened it was in a light spot. Probably not a bad idea to stick a long bar in a pto yoke and try and make the clutch slip by hand There is probably a spec. in the manual of how much force it should take to make it slip.

Alberta, Canada | This one was a little bit "twisted" to I noticed when I took it apart! For years I've always used a 95hp and smaller tractor to run the mower. The last 2 years and now again this summer I use a 120 hp tractor. So there is more torque there and if the slip clutch wasn't slipping like it should I'm sure it could have stressed it.

I've never done it but I think I may before I cut 3rd crop! We do that on our mowers after breaking a shaft like that, if the slip clutches slip you wont tear to much up . The slip clutches are always rusted/frozen up every spring when we take them apart.

Seneca Kansas 66538 | Slip clutches should be loosened and freed up before every season, doesnt matter what it is on either. A frozen slip clutch is not a slip clutch its worse than a shear bolt. Good way to tear stuff up.

New Brunswick, Canada | Mines got a good twist to it too, but the input shaft is ok, it blew apart the CV on the driveline instead. Seized slip clutch, must have been a slug go through or something.
