We need a new string trimmer for farm use, the John Deere (Echo) 35cc that we've had for years quit on us and we can't get parts to revive it. The largest displacement Stihl the local farm store sell is a 28cc model. Is this large enough for mowing down the weeds around a farm, or what model should we be looking at? TIA

I have a stihl 110, Dad has a 130. Both are good. I would probably buy the 130 if buying again, although no shortage with mine. I have a pole saw head, and hedge trimmer head for mine also. Have never run out of power....

East central Iowa | The best one is one you leave at the Stihl dealer. Buy a Homelite or Ryobi, I've got all three brands and those 2 always start and have less problems.

30 Miles Northwest of Columbus Ohio | We do commercial lawn care and we use our (4) Stihl trimmers 4-5 Hrs per day for many years. The 4 mix is a great engine with plenty of power. Use Stihl synthetic oil as directed (we use Amsoil). We also have edgers, Bush trimmers, & a pole saw.

30 Miles Northwest of Columbus Ohio | I forgot - any of the stright shaft 4 mix would be good - buy the size & weight to fit what you can carry around to do your project.

Northeast Nebraska | I have a stihl 170. Its a beast. Nice and quiet too. Takes down tall brome and weeds with ease. I also have a head that has 3 plastic blades. I like it for tough weeds, but not good if you hit something. I like how easy it is to change heads Edited by dewgubbe 6/25/2012 19:58

Deep southern Illinois | Just got a Stihl 110 with a straight shaft string trimmer, and a straight shaft brush cutter with 4 tooth grass blade, and a pole saw. Very tough, I've had the pole saw head all the way in a tree, and it didn't skip a beat, and the string trimmer will take out Johnson grass as tall as me(6'2) and reduce it to nothing. Though it won't take out mares tail etc. with heavy "stalks" well. That's what the brush cutter is for, it'll take out anything 1" and under, but it doesn't tear it up as much, and it won't do much to grass or anything without a stem. The 110 and I think the others, not sure have a compression release, and it is a breeze to start. They have a deal where if you buy a six pack of Stihl two stroke oil, you get an extra two years warranty. Also, if you buy any motor and any attachment, you can get a straight shaft string trimmer for $40.00. The shafts and gearboxes are the same on the brush utter and string trimmer, and are interchangeable heads, but with the promotion mentioned above, it's only about 13 dollars and you get the whole attachment as opposed to having to change the string head and brush blade. these promotions are in illinois/kentucky.Love it! Works great!

South Ga | I used to run an inmate work detail. We ran stihl string trimmers on ditchbanks around culverts and bridges plus cut and trimmed grass on all city property and city cemetery. They ran them for hours a day with never a problem. If inmates cant destroy them them within a couple of weeks they should last forever with normal use. i cant remember the model number though they had straight shafts. 120? maybe? Southeast Minnesota | I have a straight shaft model. I think FS85 or something like that. I put the biggest line that will fit through the holes in it. I us this for all trimming around buildings or where I may run into an obstacle. For wide open areas or real heavy weeds, I put on a grass gator swinging blade head. Boy does that take care of anything in its way! I have had my Stihl for 5 or 6 years and use it quite regularly. It has always started right away and has never missed a beat. So I don't buy into all the negative talk about the Stihl trimmers. But that is only my experience. http://www.cmdproducts.com/Grass%20Gator%204680.html
