N/E Iowa | I have a 488, looking at a 489 that a neighbor has (like new). Is there much difference between the two? Thanks..Both are 9 foot cut. |

Head floats independent of rolls on the 489, rolls are gearbox/shaft driven on the 489, different pto shaft set up. I think the 479 was the best haybine NH made, and the 488 was next, much simpler than the 489. |

North America | i have cut thousands of acres with first a 488 and now a 1465 which is just a newer version of a 489. The head floats better allowing for faster cutting. the 1465 has one more bat to push stuff over the cutter. |

Lancaster County, Pa. | If you are in rocky conditions having the head float independent of the rolls is an advantage, IMO. Head floats better/reacts quicker = fewer broken guards. We ran a 489 for years and hardly ever broke a guard which was an improvement over the former machine which I think was a 488 (it's been a while). 489 was a pretty bulletproof machine. |

New Brunswick, Canada | We had a fairly well worn 489 for a few years, I wouldn't take a free one unless it was in spectacular condition. It had no end of problems and is difficult to work on compared to older open styles. The main belts are always burning up, little chains breaking, reel pulley split in two, broken knife head bolts, a half dozen grease points that are very difficult to get to for the float related driveshafts, tongue cracking near pivot, rollers delaminating and wrapping badly, couldn't keep the roller tension bolts from seizing even when stored inside 100% of time.
I bought a high acre used Pottinger Novacat 305 disc mover to replace it and couldn't be happier. I'm sure that will change once the first bearing wipes the bar but knock on wood the last 3 seasons have been a dream with it. |

| +2 on that..............We had a 489 for a long time and loved the job it did, and with new guards and knives worked just as good as the early Discbines(Vicon, NI etc) without the headaches. Only downside on the 489 is the rolls on them are known to be quick peelers. The one we had peeled between the lugs and stayed like that when we sold it, but I am not sure how long they would have lasted, the older ones seemed to be better there. Also, the pivot on the tonque swing back at the machine was a weak spot and they would often crack. I don't remember what I did to fix ours, seem to remember machining bigger pieces, but its been a long time. Check that area out before hand if your not much of a welder/fabricator. Other than those two things, they are darn good machines. |

East central Indiana | Been working on both all my life 488 are easier to work on. 489 are good machines but better for rocks and speed. Personally prefer 488. There both solid though. I have a couple of both for sale if interested. |

north west arkansas | I always liked the 489 much better. I haven't owned any in years but I used to run 2 and have cut thousands of acres with them. I personally never cared for the 488 style. |

| I've ran both for years too and if you dont have too many rocks, I'd go with the 488. I think it cut down alfalfa much better than the 489. The 489 tended to float over heavy down alfalfa and not cut as low and close as the 488 in these conditions. |

N/E Iowa | Thanks for all the replies... Makes it tough when there is pro's and con's. I see they still make the 488, and not the 489? Is the 488 still a overall better machine? Can't figure out why they quit making one(489) and kept making the 488 all these years. I don't want to buy a 489 and have headaches, because our 488 has been pretty good to us for 18 years!!
What other "newer" style cutter bar New Holland mower seems to be good 1465?? Thanks for all the replies. |

Ringwood, IL (NEIL) | Not sure as of this year but the 489 was still made as of a few years ago under a differnt model number. I use an ancient sperry new holland 489 on 60 acres a year and it has and continues to be a great machine. Not as nice as a new diskbine but for its age and acres covered, its very solid |
