How do the Deere and new holland pull type choppers compare to one another. Capacity, durability, three row heads and hay pickups. Metal stop systems work okay for both? TIA

I had a JD 3970 and it was very dependable and had great capacity IMHO. Had it for years with very little maintenance.
I think deere used it's metal detection was licenced from NH years ago...worked great.
I could cut 20ton silage with a hot 7810 at 5mph with a 3 row.

Had a 3970 and a 3975 and both were good machines, with very few breakdowns. I think the one major difference between them is NH is much easier to service on day to day but the deere knive system needs to be sharpened about half as often as the NH when putting thru the same tons. Both hay heads have there plus's but think you would find the NH corn head to be a little better than the deere as it has an auger to take corn to feed rolls as compared to deeres where the chains take corn to feed rolls and it will sometimes bunch up before the rolls.

if you turned the metal detect off the 240 would eat the 3975. No pull type comes close to the capacity of a 240. i have a gehl 1285 and will go to a 240 soon. the gehl 1285 has way more capacity than the deere 3975

Why would the metal detector slow things down?
I would NEVER run a machine without it after removing the amount of wire etc out of the crop.
A 3970 is not a huge machine, but if you ran the same 200 hp tractor on them I will bet you will do more in a day with the Deere.
Now if hp is not limiting...not the same result.
By the way, make sure the deere has the cantilevered auger...that is a must...especially haylage.

are you serious? a deere doesnt even belong in the same field with a new holland or a gehl for that matter
