Subject: Considering a new sprayer. Hagie & Deere

We are kicking around the idea of demoing a self propelled sprayer. Like the Deere 4830 and the Hagie STS 12. We spray with 120' booms and we will want autosteer. Neighbors have a Hagie and seem to like it. The Deere is obviously very popular too. I have heard they may have finally figured out the autosteer on the 2012 Hagies, but that has been hear say. Service and support is huge and Deere is almost impossible to beat in our area. However, the upfront boom is very hard to beat. Have thought about Deere 4930, but they are just too darn heavy. Have seen ruts made around here with a big Deere that will make a grown man cry. Any opinions are welcome. User experience would be great. Thanks.

We run a 4730 and really like the JD sprayers. The only thing I could see an advantage on the Hagie would be the crop clearence and being able to see most of your tips. With the auto boom height controller being able to see your booms are not a selling point any more. Around here mostly JD and a few rogators.

My custom applicator uses Deere and they are terribly heavy.
I hate the ruts they make even when it's dry. They need duals
Or tracks IMO.

We have 2 hagies a 14 and a 16 both 2009's.  both 120s and we have a Sidedress 16 row bar.

If we was tradeing up, I would for sure go for a 12 with the new alum 120s.  The 14 and 16 are pretty heavy still, (we have the older tough steel 120's).

Even with auto height, the front boom is still a selling point here.

Both been pretty easy going after the first year gremlins which wasn't too bad.

We have autosteer on the 16,  it is riechhardt hyd steering on waas.  It works really well on broad acre spraying.  But around here, the sprayer moves around to much trying to follow rows.  I blame it on ground conditions as lots of times guys run row cleaners deep and you end up running on a berm in the middle of the row.

I have not ran the sprayers much last couple years, but would like to see how it handles following rows in a bean field that was rolled.  I can put my Omni receiver on it for that.

2 years on a sts 12.

320 tires after last year (wet) are banned for life on this farm.... forever, no exceptions.   I think any 1200 gallon sp sprayer has some gravity issues in wet ground....    We have 20.8's we use for pre digger application,  have yet to see any compaction type issues on the crops.

Service is "Ziegler like" in all aspects.  A+

Spraying into corners, around trees, poles, any object  = front boom

Keeping the sprayer "cleaner" = rear booms

No auto steer here.   Hopefully add it for pre plant next spring.   (waiting for trimble to get a platform)

Best get a demo to decide for yourself.    In my world, booms and snowblowers belong in the front.     Wish I had an upfront cultivator to get volunteer corn in my corn this year.   ;(

Good luck

We traded a 4730 for a sts12 last year. Had a good offer for a new sts12 this year. The deere was nice for sure. have 22" beets and the Deere was heavy on the back. The hagie has Trimble rtk and works good for steering not so much for record keeping. the new 120 is much better. Service has been very good even tho the dealer is 4 hours away

We do not sell these but if you are looking at the front mount boom option take a look at the Miller Nitro. We ran those when we were customs spraying back in the States. Very well designed machines. I agree with you on the Deere being to heavy. With our soils where we farm we try and use the mechanical drives if we can get away with it.

I would say demo both before you do anything. I have demoed the STS 14 with 120 foot boom, they said I could use it for a day, after the first load parked it at the end of the field and jumped back in my sts 12. The 14 and 16 are to big and heavy especially with the 120 foot boom. I like the height and the up front booms, I will say that the auto steer is terrible but it is supposed to be fixed on the new models and they are working on getting the older models better. All my neighbors run Deere and I will say they are really good machines except for they have to much weight on the back axle and don't have as much clearance. The JD auto steer is the best on the market in my opinion. The only other down fall of the Hagie is the price, I always thought JD equipment was the most expensive to buy, but after priceing both of them this spring Deere was cheaper.

We have a 4720 w/ auto steer, swath control and norac. Really like it and i am not a deere man at all. Havent run a newer hagie, so cant comment there, but I would say there is not much to dislike about the deere. Great sprayer. Also we are in the Hills worst than I would venture to say almost anyone on agtalk and we get along. The rear weight is noticable and you have to be careful but havent had any problems like backing into a hole and not pulling out. Although this is the 800 gallon machine... I was looking at the Hagie and Nitro when I bought this and I will say that while I did not test drive either, I was not impressed at all with the Nitro's quality of build. Seemed like they just bought a bunch of parts and threw it together. That was a side motor unit. Maybe they are better now. Hagies seem nice, much better than the old ones. Good Luck.

Run a 2011 STS 12 and other than a few minor things really seem to like it. Have the Alum 120ft boom and so far so good. WE run auto steer in it and it works good fro broadcast but like others have said going down rows the field is usually to rough to work well. Ag Leader steering with a paradyme by the way

agree with the millar nitro opinion, we had one on the farm i worked on in western Ky 2 years ago, it did the job, solid, and ate the acres, any issues were generally operater related, he backed it into a ditch, or too fast in the outside round, hitting the booms on things. when i did get to use it, it was a blast, can't really comment on a ST12, I have never seen one lol. and my experience on a 284 is really irrelevant :)

We traded a 4710 for a Miller 4240 which is ready to roll 3500 hrs this week. Were on year 5 and the only change we will make is 1600 gal with a 120' boom and 4 wheel steer. With the 15 nozzel spacings we have options for drop nozzel work when things go bad.Since we do all custom when others cant solve the problem they call us.The drop work is pushing 2000 ac now.Its easy when you have the boom up front. If you like to do some of the work on machines yourself Miller /Hagie are simpler to work on.I put some videos on Agtalk to give you some idea of what we do.

You must not have much for hills. I ran a 4710 for two years with a full rack in front and it was worthless in the hills. Couldnt climb anything front end would lift off and spin out.

Thanks everyone for your information. I heard a rumor this evening that Hagie is currently working on getting John Deere autotrak to work in the Hagie. Source says he thought it will be sooner rather than later that you will be able to run Deere autotrak on the Hagie.

Never ran a 10 but I heard they changed the weight balance when they went to the 20s. Check the topo map about the hills... you had me laughing. Oh and we don't have any front weights.

JD 2630/ JD receiver, Parker valve, and Reichert interface and harness with RTK will make a STS go down rows. J

Go with the Deere. By going green you will not be banging your head on the steering wheel wondering why you went with the Hagie. Upfront boom is nice and all, but you cant beat the quality of the Green Sprayer. I have ran just about every color there is custom spraying and I would still purchase a Deere over anything else.
