Subject: John Deere 7R or 8R

I am in need of some advice.

What do y'all think. Looking at a 7280R or 8285R. Both machines have the same options and there isnt a very big money difference. Will one hold its value over another or anything else I am not seeing here.

Thanks in advance

PS It's an IVT transmission I am looking at.

if you dont need the nimbleness for tight corners then get the 8R the lenth and weight you will appreciate over the 7R

One other consideration, it has been posted on this forum and have heard from the local dealer that there have been some issues with the redesigned IVT in the 7R tractors. This is all hear say so take it for what it's worth, but if it were me I would at least check into it further before making a decision.

We have an early 7230R and everyone loves it. It has front axle and cab suspension. It's more nimble than an 8R but it has the power and weight. Our unbalasted 7R weighs 24200 lbs.

Deere has the IVT issue fixed. They did some preventative work on ours and worked flawless all fall and spring.

I have a 7230R IVT and a 8335R with P/S transmission. The 8R has a lot more power but it is very clumsy compared to the 7R.

They can have the 7r give me an 8r any day. We have 3 8225 rs and I know that they are a little older but bullet proof and proven tractors. Just can't trust the 7r yet. You hate to see a tractor with 700 hrs in the shop with the transmission In a thousand pieces and I have seen it.

8R, all the components are heavier and designed for more power than the 7R with the same power. I would say that in the long run the 8R will have better resale in the long run.

Yeah I like the 8285R but it has the powershift not IVT, IVT would be pointless up in Canada, it's too damn cold.

I think the value of the 7r will hold very well. just look at other units where there are 10-50 of one model verses 1 of another.

Only if you're too busy shivering to go to work. A heater in an IVT should work just fine.

If your looking at ones with emmissions crap on them, I would go with an 8r. The dpf filter is away from the engine and electrical wires, only negative is its at the cab corner.

The 7r is under the hood within inches of oil, a/c and electrical wires. That's why the whole top is mesh. 1500 degrees that close to everything is a very stupid design in my opinion.

Have heard from a deere service tech that few have burnt and mother deere had it happen in pre production but didn't change anything.
