Wisconsin | This probably sounds like a funny question, but I'm just curious as to how you guys plant your fields and why you do it the way you do? Obviously you want to make it easy for the combine but do you do you plant your headlands first, then work from one side all the way across? Or does anyone outline their field and then end up with the uneven rows inside the field?

Morris, IL | Go around field counter clockwise, then turn around and go clockwise 1 or 2 more times. Then start somewhere most likely on the strait side. I'm shooting to allow combine to go clockwise so it can dump on the go all around the endrows. Works pretty good, just have to sometimes butt into 6 more rows because i plant with 12 and combine 6 rows.

West Michigan | I plant what I call a "C" shape. Plant longest straight edge then the first portion of back end rows. That way there is never any outside corners. Also don't have your point rows out in the field. Puts the point rows at the edge where there may be trees or coons that tip it all over ect. Never cared for the two times around the field. Not sure if anyone plants the way I do?? Seems almost everyone around here plants the two times around. Because I hate the way swath pro shuts off rows if your boundry is not right. Everyone said just shut it off the first time around the field. I told them I dont plant all the way around the field and everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

Mankato MN; Casa Grande AZ | Put the odd rows in 24 rows with 12 row planter. They are not so weedy there, and you can cultivate along the fencline.

NE Indiana | Some are harder than others to figure how to plant. Here's one of ours. It's about 35 acres. (se.jpg) Attachments ---------------- se.jpg (23KB - 716 downloads)

WCIN | That doesn't look that bad. I have an 8.5 acre field that has 17 sides on it. With a 40' planter I try to make 2 pass around the outside of the field, and then I come back in and fill in any holes. Usually I make 2 passes all the way around the field, and then start on the straightest longest side and work across the field. This also depends if the ground pounders are still in the field, or have moved on to the next field.

SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ | Work in a C shape. I never go around the field planting corn then you will have odd rows when you get done. Start along the fence and work towards the middle. I go around the field planting beans because i make my tram lines with the left side of the planter. Go around counter clockwise then reverse direction for the trams. Then go up and down. 40 ft planter 80 ft sprayer. No foamer or GPS needed on the sprayer.I have a 16/31 Kinze and move 4 row units around to make tram lines

Central, mn | Go around twice and go to a straight side and plant all the way across. This way I will only have 1 set of wedge rows

Downtown Shell Knob MO Come Visit! | I also make a C Its not really much different than going two around, I don't know why I do it that way, I just like it better. No swath pro here, just markers. It seems like it takes for ever to go twice around but if you make a C and then turn around , you have headlands and are planting in no time at all. Its all in my head though.

We have terraces some fields I plant two rounds ( 8 row planter) some fields that have high angle point rows I'll plant three rounds around to give more room to turn with planter & 8 row combine. Then try to find the longest terrace & start. Always said if we had square flat fields we could cover twice the acres!!

streator illinois | First pack a cooler of Bud Light then Endrows weaving in and out of power poles and always backing up to them to get the most out of the land. Then give er hell. If the ditch is available ill use that to turn around and not use headlands. By this time I'm usually waisted and dont care how straight or were my point rows are. The sprayer guy loves it and come harvest it usually a blur so its just like planting it. Just haveing fun on a cold gloomy day. I plant headlands then whatever is best for that field most of us have a good understanding for our groun

Woodham, Ontario | I like to go twice around with the 16-row, but if it is 100+ acre field, the field cultivators may still be in there too and I may have to do a C-patern for the headlands and finish the headlands once the C is filled in. Row shutoffs are amazing, first year with them.

mn | I do nothing fancy, I just use a corn planter

Jackson County, AL | Dad likes us to go around everything at least twice since he does the spraying. We plant with a 12 row and he sprays with a 90 ft boom. With 60 ft all the way around he has that outside through to drive in vs. just aiming the sprayer across whatever rows happen to be in the way. If we must only plant one through next to a thicket he likes us to at least drop a marker for him to use when spraying.

Northeast ks | If you plant in a C- shape, you end up running over corn with the combine unless you have room to turn around in the corners outside of the field. Around here, most everyone plants two or three times around a field because there are a lot of trees or fence rows. The rows are planted with the straightest side of the field, which is usually by the roads. Terraced ground most people plant with the terraces, although some go over them in straight lines.

I'm not following, someone explain the "C" shape to me.

Me too, kinda. I try to plant things so the next sprayer and sidedress pass have an easier time getting clear around the field and knowing where they are. Next consideration is making it so the cart and combine can work. If that takes a couple extra minutes with the planter I will do it.

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | Holy cow. So that's why row shutoffs were invented. Our fields are mostly circles, so there are almost always dry corners to turn around on. It makes planting and harvest WAY easier.

Ilderton, Ontario | I plant 2x around field so that the sprayer operator has rows to follow to keep the boom out of the fence, trees, etc. then I go to the longest straightest side and start.

swia | I just know everyone else's planted field looks like a picture an mine looks like a puzzle. Seems to all get combined. Ran two this last week, one with all bells and whistles, one with out. You have to be pretty alert to catch right line with auto steer. Going around corners on a steep side hill( I don't mean 90's) the old sf2 doesn't quite do the job, you can really watch your planter better with auto steer, if your not on the phone. I guess the best thing about auto steer is no marker tracks to wash out. Technology is nice , Im not sure it is going to be the deciding factor if a farm prospers or not.

NE Iowa | 2 rounds with the 16 row first, then some fields we start in the middle, some we start next to a terrace, and some are next to the fence. Then we usually go over here and go this way for awhile, then head to the other end and go that way for awhile, and then fill in the rest of the field going toe other way. All of this while trying to stay on the contour. My uncles farm sqaure 80's and 160's in central Iowa and always shake and ask, "how in the grawlix do you know where to start when you plant these fields?" Here's what alot of our fields look like. Makes me appreciate the precious few acres we have that I can set an AB line on.
