Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

In contrast to last year's late spring, things are markedly different this year. Celebrated St. Pat's day in the MT this year. Still a few wet spots that would have made big problems for anything other than this rig.

Farmland SB2 seed boots and McKay 5" sweeps on the plain C-shanks. The tool had disk levelers but I took them off and have them in a pile waiting for someone to buy them. I'm seeding at 4.5 MPH so the levelers aren't necessary to keep from stair-stepping.

I don't have any run blockage monitors. The setup came with an Agtron monitor to keep track of shaft speed, fan speed, and tank levels. I found the seed flow sensors to be unreliable so replaced them with an in-tank camera.

What is your normal seeding date?

We're about 150 miles north of you, and still over a month away from seeding.

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Hi Matts, Yes it is very early to be starting. The first year I farmed on my own, I started Mar. 25 1970. Unlike this year, that spring had very dry & dusty ground. We didn't get much rain throughout the growing season and the crop showed it too. Then that fall, the price of wheat fell to $1 a bushel. What a way to start a farming career!
This year, the ground is very wet and the price looks to be much better too so we're hoping for much better results.

The field is over a mile and a quarter long. I have the Operator Alive time limit on the Guidance set as high as it allows (15 minutes) and it beeps & requires input before the rig makes it from end to end.

I usually try to start seeding April 15 or thereabouts.
Big winter storm to our west this AM. Might be a while before I finish this field if it makes it this far east.

Might not be quite accurate to say I have no "run" monitor. Every couple passes, I get out of the tractor, run back to the cart, give the feed handle a crank or two,  check that stuff is coming out of all the openers, and run back to the tractor.

That is a good way to get your exercise!! Nice video(finally got high speed internet so I can view videos now) and pics. Looks like a very nice rig you have there. Is the rtk working well for you? Looks like it is kind of dry there. Was the same way here until a few days ago. Now we don't dare go into the fields or we won't get out for a while! Sure has been a different winter here. Good luck this year.

That's my run monitor on my concord too.... LOL! it is a lot more reliable and gives me less headaches than the kind with all the wires. Those concords are pretty darn ahd to beat in my opinion. I use the same 60' as you and then I have a 40' that I use as a cultivator/fertilizer applicator in front of the planter.

Yes, it's all that I expected and more. My farthest field from the radio tower is 3 3/4 miles. I've been using a Honda 4-wheeler for surveying with the radio antenna mounted on the front rack. Still had good signal @ 4 miles away. I'd expect even better range with the antenna mounted on the roof of the tractor. The advantages of flat, treeless farm location.

Ed, you need to let our neighbor now about your blockage monitor. Our neighbors hired man seeded 500 ac with 1/6th of the drill plugged! That was not a good situation.

NE SD

For years we only had a blockage monitor that had one sensor for every tower. Every hour or two we would do like you did. Have you ever just stopped, picked the drill up, and drove forward a few feet when you get to the end? Works the same way but saves having to spend the time cranking on the cart drive.

Yes it was fallowed last year. All of the field was chem fallowed and some had a pass or two of mechanical tillage. We were extremely wet last spring and early summer so lots of stuff was done in a different way than usual for me.

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

It's a wired system that I bought from this outfit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-REAR-VIEW-BACK-UP-CAMERA-SYSTEM-REVERSE-TRUCK-SAFETY-/260746847656?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb5b925a8
I mounted my camera on the center divider inside the tank -- as high as I could get it and pointed at the feed roller. The IR LEDs in the camera illuminate the product so you can see inside the tank when the lid is sealed. When the tank is full you can see a ring of white blur. As it empties, focus improves so you can see the product and also the ladder rungs as a guide to how full the tank is. When the tank empties, you can see the roller turning and the individual flutes that expose themselves more and more as more product empties out.
I don't think a wireless camera would transmit very well from inside a metal tank but since any camera needs power anyways, the signal cable also has power wires and it's no extra work to run the combined power/signal wire. I routed the cable through the same place that the tank level sensor entered the tank. On my Fargo-Aire cart, that happened to be through the tank pressurization tube.
