Working by myself sometimes can be difficult.

Now that second picture actually worked quite well for me to get the hood up so I could work on the small rad. hoses by the fill port.

Just curious, what are you doing or why the hood up?  I know much was made by JD not make a lift up hood but we farmed with an 8400 for 7 years and never had to take the hood off

I see no potential problems. Might want to buy a hard hat to keep her happy though. Joe

Your not the only one curious, I just tip the hood to which ever side and block it if I have to do something.

Don't have to open the hood on our red ones very often but if I do, I just pull the latch and it open right up! Just sayin!

I cussed my 8*00 hood for years thinking-"couldn't deere have come up with something better?" My 8*20 came with a really nice plastic raisable hood that I just loved until it started cracking and a new one is $4000. I want my steel hood back.

Could go yellow. A Challenger opens up very nicely. My older Masseys require that same type of ingenuity.

Ever own an MX 270? I had one and it sold me 2 8410s and 2 8420s.

Got my hood off of the 8300 for the first time since if have owned it. Five years. Needed to fix a hydraulic leak right in front of the cab and replaced the seals on the pump right behind the fan. Putting HID lights all around so having the hood off made better access to the hood lights. The big unknown positive was waxing the hood setting on sawhorses is much much easier than on the tractor!

I've done the same thing on a 50 series before, except I used lumber for the back of the hood too.

I like that rear rope idea, works better than the little blocks i used on ours.. at least the hood is pretty light so it dosnt hurt when in falls on your arms. Only had the hood open 3 times. Once to replace that fuel line that goes up to the front radiator, then to put HID lights on, and then take HID lights off before it went down the road.

"Famous Potatoes"
My two older tractors are an 8950 and an 8400. While i do like the tilt hood on the newer deeres and magnum, with 4 bolts and a helping hand i can have the entire hood off and unrestricted access to the engine. In 8000 hrs. only had to do it once though. The hood on the magnum is up so much ive lost track of how many gas struts i've replaced on that thing.
Will also agree on the earlier mx statement. My last red tractor was an mx285, and if someone showed up here with that tractor again i'd shoot em on the spot. The MX is the reason my farm is all green now. I loved the 89 series magnums. I kept that tractor because after many years of owning red machines that was the last one that was worth a damn.

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.

We had to remove the hood on our 8310 to replace a couple of exhaust manifold bolts over Winter.  We had the luxury of some help.  Between three of us we were able to lift it completely off and set it on my ATV homemade trailer.  This was a handy place to wax it up before reinstalling it.

This was in my shop,  I came home one day and the hood was back on.  I don't know how many folks were involved in setting it back on but I was happy to see that it had been done.
