sw iowa | I bought a 1000 bu grain cart in december and have been looking for a 4wd to pull it this fall. A neighbor has a very clean well cared for 4890 for sale. It has 3500 hrs total, with 100 hours on the powershift and about 700 hours on the scania diesel. Eight new firestone 20.8x38 radials, pto but no 3pt. I would probably only put 100-150 hours a year on it. Trying to decide if i should buy it for 26,000 or look for something else. Its alot of money for it I know, but you wouldn't find a better one. Have also looked at a few 9250=9330 case ih but I don't kmow if a hundred hours a year justifies a 75000 dollar tractor. What would you buy? Thanks in advance. |

Monticello IL | 26,000 seems high even for the most cherry 4890. |

Rivers, MB | I'd agree. And not known to be the most reliable series of tractors around.
Don't have another tractor you could run the cart on that's not used during harvest? Or trade another tractor you use and use the money to trade up to a newer one that can pull the cart as well?
Very rarely ever hear any one talk well about that series of tractor. We had them when I was a kid but the key was that dad traded almost every year.

Ohio | Why did the powershift fail at 3400 hrs ? Why did the engine fail at 2800 hours ? Those tractors don't have that great of resale, just a fact. A lot of the price is the tires, but it is still to high. Have you thought of putting some kind of power plant on the cart to run the unload. You are paying a premium for the pto feature. |

sw iowa | Ken,not sure why the powershift failed, but the owner thought the original owner got the motor overheated is why it was overhauled. I've considered buying an old bareback steiger and powering the cart with another motor or a hydrastat off an ih combine but thought it might be just as simple to buy a tractor with a pto. |

Ohio | The one thing that is positive, is the powershift. An old manual Stieger/Versatile would be economical , but being a long distance from the truck and stuck in one gear would get old. If you could find a Stieger with a Allison would work really well. You will get some good replys from the Case guys. Good luck. |

| RUN as fast as you can AWAY from that tractor ,,,,,they are a disaster waiting to happen,,,,,,,,,There is NOTHING good about those tractors,,,,,,,just a money pit |

Rivers, MB | Problem is that the PS is still only 4 gears in 4 different ranges. I don't remember for sure but I suspect that the top speed in the range below road gear will still be too slow to get anywhere quick.

Winkler, Manitoba Canada | Your slipping mennoboy! Only three powershift speeds in four ranges. 12 gears total. The chart in an old brochue shows a range of 4.3 to 7.2 mph in the third range. In fourth range the speed chart shows 9.5 - 17.4 mph with 23.1x30 tires. My father in law used to own a 4490 which treated him pretty well. The tractor was amazingly game pulling a 35' Friggstad deeptiller.

Rivers, MB | Oops. Its been a few years since we've had one and I was 12 or 13 when we got rid of the last one. I think we got our first 9150 in 1988 that replaced our last 4694. I can still picture the 2 gear shift levers and was thinking 4 and 4 but one place had to be reverse I guess. Just makes it even worse for a grain cart tractor in my opinion. That would be just like our 2590 for gears then. 3rd and 3rd gives 7.5 mph at 2000rpm.
Thanks for the correction. |

Iowa | I've got a 4494 that I paid 12 for - yep its alittle smaller but has the nicer cab too - reliability wise theyre not great - but I havent had any problems with mine to speak of - the scary thing and the reason I always think of getting rid of her is your always 1 oops away from scrap iron - powershift, engine, electronics - if they go bad repair is more than the tractor is worth - one thing to watch is some of the parts arent available anymore - I decided to get the electronic rear steering working on mine last yr and the parts were a chore to find - luckily I have a local pirvate mechanic that likes to work on and has experience in onlder cases. |

Well if it was a 4690 I would say RUN. The 4490 wasn't bad but the 4890 is a pretty decent machine. I have a 2870 (most the same as a 4890) and the engine was done at about 8k hours and the tranny about 200 hours later. Tranny didn't need it but I did it for longevity! The Scania pulls real nice and is very easy on fuel. The tractor is a tad light for the horsepower but the new tires are a bit of a bonus. I would like a wee bit more rubber but that's me. Its a great PTO tractor but as a pulling tractor it needs more #s! At $26k its pricey - - in western Canada I would be looking in the $12k to 17k (top would have to be very nice) for price. |
