I have to put new belts on my 605M Vermeer baler. I bale a lot of cornstalks. I am not happy with the alligator splices. Where can I buy some other type of belt with a different splice that holds up better at a reasonable price. I think the last time I went to the dealer he charged me close to $400 per belt.

I would call Hammond Equipment 334-627-3348. They're a Vermeer dealer and also a belting dealer. Should be able to advise you about the different splices and belts as well as quote you a set of belts if you want. Several years running, Don has sold more belts than any other dealer in the United States, so he knows a thing or two.

What actually failed on the splice?I've never had a Alligator splice fail.

They tear loose where they are riveted to the belt.

Have you replaced the pins in the lacing?Perhaps a pin wore threw and not pulling on entire lacing.

Have you replaced a belt? They need to all be same length.Old one will be stretched.

Speaking of replacing the pins what is the most simple way to do that? I have a 535 that I need to do this year.

Take tension of of belts.Put vise grip on one end of pin and pull out 1/2 way then start new pin from other side.Work new pin in as you pull out old pin.

I replaced two belts last fall. They all are going to be replaced very soon. I did replace all of the pins last fall too. The baler is a 2008 model.

Do you have a M or Super M. I have a set for the SM that I may part wiith . Im over by Carroll. Or, if your belts arn't totally shot, take them down to Ag Belt in Des Moines and have them relaced. They are the people that Deere and Vermeer were getting them from. Call down and ask for Jon. He has been there the longest and knows his stuff.

I have 3 of the 522 inch belts and 1 of the 533 inch belts if you are interested and some good used ones, but I wouldn't mix them if it was me.

GoodYear has developed a belt for corn stalk operators that have Vermeer balers. The belt is called the 315 Rock. It is designed for the 604 & 605 Super M balers and currently the OEM supplied belt.  The USA made Flexco Alligator lacing only cost $20 per belt for a dealer. Most dealers will charge around $50 per belt. You can use the MATO lacing like John Deere does but the lacing is made in Germany and is more expensive.
