Converse Indiana
The no till coulter blades on my planter are getting wore down, going to put new on. The ones on it now are 13 wave. Just wondering what about using 25 wave or bubble flute blades. What is the difference between the blades and what they do? I plant mostly conventional till but some no till in soybean stubble at 5.5 to 6 mph. Just wondering witch way to go. Most planters around here are 13 wave.

They say that the bubble blades compact, and "they" are never wrong.* I had them for years, and never liked them. They might work on your soils, but if you and others in your area use 13 wave, why try to fix it if it ain't broke? Many are moving away from coulters altogether, claiming to get a better seed trench. If you have residue movers, you might try it. If you don't, coulters make sense, as you have them in place. Just run them well above the depth of the double disc openers.

The Great Plains Turbo-Till coulters have worked really well for us.

I've been told that the bubble blades work best in sandy conditions. For your speed, I'd say the 13 wave is the best. 25 wave blades are for slower applications, while the 8 wave is for much faster speeds.

Between the coulter cart on my no-till drill and my planter I've had bubble, 13 wave, 25 wave, and turbo coulters. Nothing wrong with the bubble except the real or imagined sidewall compaction. 13 wave worked a wider area but may not penetrate as well in hard soil. 25 wave worked a smaller area and were better in hard soil. My favorite are the Great Plains turbo coulters. They penetrate well and don't throw as much soil at higher speeds. They really shine no-tilling soybeans into wheat straw. All the other coulters would hairpin tough straw into the slot while the turbo coulters will cut it.

From my exp you've got that backwards.

More waves = shallower waves = less dirt moved = more speed.

Less waves = deeper waves = more dirt moved = less speed.

More waves also take more down pressure to keep them in the ground.
