Since it sounds like the Deere Plus50 engine is getting priced out of hand, what are good alternatives? ( nothing new enough to be in warrenty). Don't have a problem with the oil, just the price.
Happen to be in Sams today, and their Rotella 15-40 was about $569 for 55 gal drum

Bought two barrels from deere the other day 800 bucks a pop 15w 40.  Only thing I can say is in 22 years of changing oil, no engine problems and to me that means a bunch.

This thread will probably bring out some gooduns,, I realize the price is out of hand and I think it has always been above average price wise. It is all I have ever used in the equipment here, it's going to need to go up quite a bit more before I consider any alternatives, I think it is good oil and as far as I know it has been good for the equipment. Of course some will tell you that the Plus 50 oil is the same as Pennzoil !!!!!

I switched all our equipment over to Plus 50 over ten years ago, the tractors don't seem to burn as much oil and have had no problems so far. Just picked up another barrel Friday.
No plans to change here earthier.

Archer oil. I would put it up against any oil on the market. Its very competitive in price an the best quality oil I know off. It has an aircraft grade base stock 6082D. Check out there website for more info.

The +50 isn't quite as painful if you buy it in bulk. Noticed on a bill the other day it is 12.60 thataway. So if you truly can run it 50% longer, then it's probably cheaper. We consistently run it 3-400 hours on the ag tractors, send in the oil analysis, and it's still well within specs. But perhaps some other brand would come back the same way. Have always had a hard time digesting how there can be much difference in any of the oils if they all have the same rating.

If you don't have anything with DPF Mobil Delvac MX is priced less than 1300 since it doesn't have to meet emission specs. It has higher additives that the newer oils have...similar to Case IH oil. TBN is around 12 where newer oils are 8 or so. Going on a full year with it and all our samples came back just as good as any other oil we have tried including rotella(pre CJ4) and CIH. This oil was recommended by our supplier. They have a lot of construction companies running it in dozers and other heavy eq. Haven't bought since last year but it was under $9 but it's over that now.

We use conklin convoy and do analysis every 100-150 hrs. Costs more than t50 but supposed to last longer and seems to. With t50 most things would go 100-150 hrs without adding than would have to add everyday. No failures with either

if you purchase a new or low hour tractor , sprayer or combine and use the recomended oil they will warrenty the engine for 8000 hours providing you send in oil samples at the manufactures suggested time .the cost of this warranty is a nominal fee with no deductable. must use cenex oil which is less money than john deere

Tip of the Thumb of Michigan

We've been using Chevron for 30 years no problems.  Our  Chevron dealer had been recommending an oil that was the same rating as the plus 50, but this year he had an oil that was rated better for extended use.  They run it in all their delivery trucks and love it.  Sorry, but I can't remember the savings over Deere, but I think it was + or - 20% savings.

x2. Deere oil is formulated by the cheapest bidder and Shell only makes money for the Dutch and the Saudis. Archer base stocks come from the sweet crude of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. It is then formulated in our own plant in Council Bluffs, Iowa to very high standards. I have customer testimonies about less oil consumption and even less fuel consumption coming to Archer from an OEM oil.

Do you all know that Deere oils are not API rated? If you use them in a tier IV diesel in a pickup truck and have trouble, the manufacturer would have a legal leg to stand on to deny warranty.

We had been using bulk oil from our amoco supplier, then a few years ago the business changed over to Cevron oil I beleive. I remember they had a warranty program too if you did all the oil samples. Not sure on the specs comparing to Plus 50. I was just thinking ............. Our oil supplier delivers oil to a ton of John Deere dealers in Mn and Wis and possibly others. Picked up in Chicago. So , are they getting the same oil as we are ?

I still use JD engine and hydraulic oils. I'd switch engine oil based on price much quicker than hydraulic oil but don't tell Deere that. I load my empty or almost empty drums on my pickup and take them to the dealer for fill up out of their bulk oil tank at the bulk oil price. JD bulk oil on sale is fairly competitive in price to any other quality oil. What's expensive is if you must have a new JD drum or bucket each time. I've used Mobil and now have a Sam's Club drum of Rotella for my Deutz irrigation motor that burns oil and the old trucks that get more time than mileage.

This is intended to show up as a reply to a post by 1586 concerning Delvac MX.

Last purchase of oil here was Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40, mostly in mid 2011 for around $10/gallon, pkg sizes 55 drum, 5 gal pail (with rebate), some gallon jugs.

All the machines it went into ran fine, no problems. Previous oil purchased from CaseIH. No complaints with that product, changed on basis of recommendations from other oil users.

Same oil was purchased for township grader, recent sample page attached. Problems getting page attached to post prevented timely posting. The latest sample on the page was Delvac 1300 Super 15W40, all others came from Caterpillar 15W40 oil. Note that first sample was on new machine and oil was not changed. One oil change was done during lease by previous operator with no sample submitted, an apparent gap between samples 1 and 2.

This is not an attempt to recommend and/or sell any brand of product. The attached sample page is intended to show some numerical criteria which may be informative for certain people. I would point out the test information for the 500 hour drain interval does uphold manufacturer recommendations for that length of service.

The only thing that matters is if its API certified. All other talk means nothing. John Deere says there oil is the best. IH says theres is. Always buy oil on quality not price. Shop repairs are to expensive to think about any thing else. People spend thousands off dollars on equipment. An yet if a good quality oil costs 50 bucks more they complain. Oil is not oil theres crap out there believe me. People take 2 minutes to decide on a motor oil to protect there mega dollar tractor. Oil analysis would prove me right.

JD's Plus 50 is just catching up to the rest of the industry. CJ-4 oils came out in 07, and JD never saw a need to produce an oil until Plus 50. It is true that it is not API licensed, so don't use it in any engine other than JD if there is a warranty on it. The warranty on any other diesel engine can easily be void since you would not be using an API licensed product.
Check out Cenex oil. Top of the line quality CJ-4, it comes with a warranty that won't cost an arm and a leg and is a better price than JD. With my warranty, there is no deductible and more importantly, you don't need to prove that the oil caused a problem! The warranty on my new tractor only cost $299, then I got $200 back in oil coupons. Best part is that it lasts for 9 yrs/9000 hours.
I'd rather buy oil from an oil company, and my equipment from and equipment company!
