Caldwell County Kentucky | Got about a 1970 bin sweep for a 24' bin. The original end rubber whatever is long gone. Went to a bin dealer some years ago and they sold me this end tire thing. Worked fine until the rubber tires wore down. I guess I'll get some rubber sheeting/belting and cut it to size. What other ideas do you have on how to make the sweep feed itself into the corn pile? I know, newer designs sweeps with a gear reduction on the end and grain vacs are better. But the bins and sweep are what I have. I rebbuild those in my shop all the time. Go buy the correct # of rubber pads to replace the ones worn out. I use a press to compact them and drive the pins back in. Not a hard job at all.

north central ky | you should be able to order those rubbers fairly cheap. just take the nut off and there are about five or so thin rubber discs that slide over the shaft. i did make a wheel one time to fit a sweep that i shortened. i disassembled a big solid rubber caster wheel and mounted it on the end.

North West IA/western AZ | There is a dealer (brain vacuum can't think of the name) in Atlantic IA that sells the tire pieces to replace them.

NW Iowa | Looks like the ones we use...one of ours has the rubber pads, the other has a solid plastic wheel on it. The wheel is sort of rubberish...probably something you could find at a farm store for a small wagon or similar...seems to do ok, still have to push it along every now and again.

KY | Just bought a new one last month for a couple of our 24 footers, looks much identical to your 70's version! Same wheels. Metal backing plate, 4 rubber discs, metal backing plate and locking nut. www.midwestagsystems.net will get you the number to call and order some pads.

Floyd County, Iowa | Don't know about replacement wheels, but if all your bins are the same diameter, why not make the sweep a little longer so that the wheel is running on the flat ribbon around the outside edge of the floor? If your other bins are wider, maybe put a track in this one for the sweep drive wheel to run on. I would think that the ribs (appear to be, anyway) in the floor would hold the sweep from biting into the corn, as the drive wheel has to "climb" out of a ditch every few inches, only to fall into the next one. Just a thought.

Central Mo | At least you weren't in the bin when that thing was running........that would be illegal!

We have several bin sweeps that uses that kind of end wheel. We use to buy replacement pads but the last couple a neighbor who has a sprint car cut pads out of the sidewalls of his worn out race tires using a hole saw. They seem to be more aggressive & last longer than the boughten pads.

Schlegel Farms, Hagerstown Indiana | Wrap it the opposite way it spins, and it will make a couple laps on duct tape. I replaced the wheels (stack of them) and the new ones didn't last any time........much softer than the originals....so I just use the duct tape

Remsen, Iowa | Do your self a favor and trash the wheel then go buy a walker for the end of the sweep auger. It bolts on to the end of the auger just like the wheel. Has two irons that osolate foward and back to move the auger foward. They are ajustable to run the auger closer or away from the floor. When you get to then last of the corn, it will not go a 100 mph around the floor till you turn the auger off. Once they are ajusted right and you may have to relocate some screws that will stop the walker, you will never have to push the sweep around the bin again.

When our wheel wore out we fabricated a runner out of a steel rod and bolted it onto the grain back plate. It won't propel itself, but a little push with a scoop keeps it going. Have used it this way for years.

middle ga | Those things scare the crap out of me. My neighbors son got caught in one and was severely injured. Really bad cuts in his calves and ripped his pants off. Almost bled to death before hired man found him. NEVER use these things alone. JHolland Middle Ga

Remsen, Iowa |
I would guess any grain bin dealer worth his salt would know about them. Sudenga is one place that has them. http://www.sudenga.com/images/12_1_06/05_7_20_08.pdf &nb... Go to page 10.
Edited by rambo 2/1/2012 22:51

Those rubber wheels are a terror. definitely get your self the Norstar Sure-Grip extension!! its a gear reduction with a 18" wheel. when the bin is empty it moves at walking speed. it will slip before it buries itself. you can get them direct from Norstar ( www.http://norstarindustries.ca ) or they have dealers all over. i would never go back to the small rubber wheel.
