Looking at a 4166 for a grain cart tractor would it work for a
750 or less cart?
Also for a large square baler?
Are parts easy to come by today?
Lastly whats it worth in fair condition.
Thanks
JB

I don't know too many folks who would have too many great things to say about a 4166. You should ask the question at Redpowermagazine.com. Lot's of knowledgable red iron folks over there.

I agree, hot cab, not the right gears, underhorsepowered but great old engine and drive train if you want to deal with it.

Short coupled, that thing made the 4-125 White look like an innovation.

Sounds like it will do what you need it to do, its a horse no one wants to ride.

About the only big problem with the few in the area was that they tended to eat transmission bearings which then destroyed the rest of the transmission and hydraulic pumps, Several I know of went to the scrap yards for that reason. I suspect shifting on the roll is going to be nearly impossible if that is important for the grain cart.

NE OHIO
I have had a 4186 for about 5 years. It has been a good old work horse. It is used mainly for tillage work here in NE Ohio. It is kind of a rough ridding tractor but, works well pulling a 7 bottom 16" plow, 11 shank Landoll soil master chisel plow and a Krause Landsman finisher. It is equipped with 1000 rpm PTO and 4 wheel brakes which will be an advantage when operating a grain cart. The problem would be it does not have a power shift. The air conditioner has been switched to R-134 and keeps the cab confortable in temperature in the high 80's. Mechanically it has treated me well so far. The think you have to be aware of is it is a 150 HP tractor not a 200HP tractor. The 4166 and 4186 are basically identical except for year of manufacture.

Stay away and you will be happier in the end. My granddad and dad had a 4166 and a 4186 when I was a teenager, never wore one out, too many transmission problems. Switched over to a 1586 and 1486 and parked the 4 wheel drives. They rode really rough and shifted hard and would buck when they got in a hard pull.

I read Jb's posts then looked at the issues pointed out about the 4166. I wondered would a 2+2 be any better? I am doubt it would be any easier shifting. I had heard they rode nice. It seems they might be a tad newer and workable on a baler? Yet still an affordable price. More questions than help for JB from me.

It would most likely be a step up from the 4166
but I don't need this unit bad just thought it might be a cheap
horse for static use with the cart (since we don't unload on go much).
Road would only be about 2-3each way between farms so ride is no big deal
Use a 9270 now that could be working ground . Could also use on sherdder
to go places I don't want a higher price MFD . The baler was a what if thought
about this high fiber ethanol business in the future .
Since it's a simple stupid unit you could have anyone drive it if you gave them
some simple instruction
Would be lucky to get 100 hours a year
Have not even seen this unit so it may be great big 0 unit

Well, after spending the summer with a big square baler, I think it would be a PITA there. You need lot's of gears to keep it running full enough but not over running. The 18 speeds on the Magnums could use a few more gears between 4.5 and 6.5 MPH.

If I had a 12/23 or 16/31 planter to work with then a 9230
would work fine since we could get the run hours up to a
much more manageable number IE 500-700 a year range
by using it for all kinds of jobs most use a MFD for
would be over kill at 100hrs and costly in deperiacion (sp?)
Since we are less than $ 7500 for the 4166
