North Carolina | Alright for you guys in the know about Volvo trucks and engines. Tell me the pros and cons. The truck is a 2001 Volvo 64T200 10 speed The engine is a Volvo VED12 345hp ( which I wish was more hp ) And it has 3.73 gears. ( which I dont know nothing about ) Is 3.73 good or bad for farm and road. And a 164in wheel base.

Lancing, TN | Don't like the volvo engine's "jake" brake at all. Would have to buy a 345hp tandem truck really right to want it. A 345 hp single axle would be fine if you needed a single axle truck.

Central Nebraska | Don't know about the engine. 3.73 gears will be good for a farm semi. 164 inch wheelbase will also be nice for getting in and out of fields.

Wheatley, Arkansas | Pros; a Volvo will outride any truck out there, hands down IMO. A Volvo will out turn any truck I've ever been around. Volvos have very good visibility. A Volvo is built to survive a crash more than any other truck I'm aware of, the engine mounts are designed to drop the engine out the bottom in the event of a headon crash. The Volvo engine pulls good, runs good, and is pretty fuel efficient IMO. The 3.73 gears and 345 horses with I'm thinking 1550 torque will pull like a champ out of the fields loaded. Cons; Volvos having steel cabs will be heavier and more prone to rust than aluminum cabs. The instrumentation is not as simple or reliable as the single gauge system used in Paccar trucks. The Volvo engine is not as easy to find mechanics to work on as the big three. The Volvo does not carry the prestige and awe factor with the neighbors as a Paccar product would. If I was in the market today for a farm to market truck, and I was going to be the one driving it, would I buy a Volvo? Sure would. Would I buy a Volvo with a VED12 engine in it? If the price was right I sure would. Would I consider a truck spec'd like you show here? Yes I would.

Garrett County, MD | One of our trucks is a Volvo with a Volvo engine and tranny. Bought it real cheap. Would NOT buy another one. HARD to work on. STEEL water lines... talk about a pain... You might as well hold your hand out the window, it would slow you down more than their "jake" No power, and its rated 425. Horrible ride, but its a daycab, not one of those big over the road with the integrated sleepers... i hear those ride nice. Uncomfortable cab. Uncomfortable seat. Good visability. Relatively reliable. Short wheelbase, turns real tight. You better have a volvo dealer close because some of the things you will need them to do. If your going to only run it short trips and do all the work yourself and are in flat country and get it REALLY cheap then yeah go for it. Otherwise buy a Pete or Kenworth with a CAT or Cummins. Just my opinion Austin

Blue Earth, MN | I believe, volvo uses an exhaust brake like a Mack we once had. Better off opening both doors and letting the wind slow you down. Other than that, the volvo engines are really quite smooth and economic. At least the ones I have had experience with.

Modena, Wisconsin | I drive an 05 with VED12 and 10 speed autoshift. No way I would give it up to drive a KW or Pete. Drove a KW with Cat before and the jake in the Volvo is 10x better and quiet as well. The Volvo rides nicer than the others and milage is good. The one I drive is set at 435. The downside is the electronics can be problems in the earlier models and you need to get them from Volvo.

Garrett County, MD | The newer ones must be better, mines a 97 I think.

Trenton, KY | We have two 2001 Volvos with the VED 12 engine in them, and they are 345 HP, both have low pro 22.5 rubber and they have 3.90 rear ends with 10 speed transmissions. We like them alot, and as others have stated, they will ride great, turn tight, and they pull very smooth. Ours have Meritor 10 speed transmissions in them and I think they are the smoothest transmissions I have ever driven. Ours are 157" wheelbase if I remember correctly.

They come with an exhaust brake, Jake brake is optional. Most think the exhaust brake is a jake.

Austin - 12/28/2011 19:52 The newer ones must be better, mines a 97 I think. Volvo started cranking out the new VNL/VNM series in '98. Light years ahead of the older model trucks. I love our Volvo! As others have stated great visibility, turning radius, and ride! As well as other great features! I have no real first hand experience with their motor but I've always wondered if they were reliable. Our truck has an N14 Cummins in it. Unless you are set on the truck you are looking at, you might shop around a bit there are quite a few Volvo trucks running around with Cummins and Detroit motors. Finding a CAT motor in a Volvo would be very difficult to find. I have a buddy that use to be a mechanic at a Volvo dealer. He always said there were just as many broken down motors with the big 3 as there was with Volvo.
