Looking into purchasing a John Deere 9630. Then got looking at some of the pricing on a 9530. Wondering if I could chip a 9530 to get the power up to or over the 500hp mark, and is this safe? I believe the block and planetary drives are the same, so should be safe on drivetrain? Anybody have any experience with this let me know. Thanks.

Use a steinbauer chip and you will be amazed at how the 9530 does, well over 500 hp. Been using them for about 3 years and have them on 3 tractors, no problems, no regrets.

NEMO

Can I get one for my D-17? I'm gonna try and get 700 acres in one day spraying this year and thought the extra power would help the "nurse tractor" in the soft spots. NT

You can bump a 9530 up to 9630 specs with no issues. You are correct in that the engine and drivetrain is largely the same with both models. For your interest, here's a dyno chart showing before and after results for a 9430.

Similar results can be expected for a 9530.  Here's a short video showing a dyno pull for 9330: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzHIeD9ZFqk

As others have said, chipping is one option but if you're interested to know more about reprogramming, please email me.

Have you used them on a 9530 or just a 30 series tractor? I would be worried about using it on a 9630, but for an engine and drivetrain that are already tuned down, figured this would be an option at least.

We chipped our sprayer and after two weeks, I had ruined an injector, but we had chipped a 9300 years back and had no problem. Is that what most programs or chips are doing, just pumping out more fuel through the injector which is now putting out even higher pressure on it? Heard stories of injectors wearing holes in piston and side wall of blocks.

Tell me why you could get a 9530 in a scraper special but not a 9630

I can't speak for all "chips" or "power modules" but a vast majority of them make power by increasing fuel pressure. Injector problems are the result but as you mentioned, worst case scenerio is a hole in the piston due to excessive heat. Steinbauer apparently is able to fool the computer to adjust more then just rail pressure and I'm sure there is someone here who can describe how they work better then I can. Your sprayer injector problem may or may not have been caused by the chip, but it's safe to say that by raising rail pressure beyond oem specs, things will wear out quicker. A good programming tune does not alter any values beyond oem specs (ie. if you want a 9530 programmed to 9630 specs then rail pressure along with injection timing + a few other variables will be exactly at 9630 OEM specs). Programming makes it possible to tailor make the upgrade to suit your needs, or if you prefer you can purchase your own hand held programmer which stores several different tunes allowing you to program your ecm for the power needs of the day. This is pretty popular with the large frame tractors since they don't need huge power for every job, but a couple times a year its nice to have 550 or 600 hp. In the event you want your tractor returned to stock its just a matter of hooking up to the diagnostic port inside the cab and pressing a few buttons. Very common in the pickup truck tuning world. Your choice depends on your needs. Check out the options and which one suits your needs the best. Just be careful of the inexpensive products because in my view, the old saying still holds true. You get what you pay for.
