I found this on the internet and thought it was pretty cool, from what i gathered it was a Cat prototype that could be fitted to any model tractor, but it was hard on transmissions and tore stuff up on the tractor so it was done away with, if anyone knows anything about this id like to hear about it... thanks!

Looks more like a photoshop, to me. How in the world would you steer it?

The really cool picture to find would be the articulated Cat Challenger prototype with tires instead of traks. Seems like a remember seeing that online a while ago.

It's been so long ago now, I dont even remember the thread title(s). But there were several threads over a couple year period where various people had posted these and a few more of some of the cat testbeds. One guy I think said he had a non-compete or non-disclosure contract and was getting some flak or whatever over his involvement in posting them. Then,.....next guy says he was on tour at the cat factory somewhere and took them when the tour guide was telling them all about the stages of testing. I dunno. But if you search here and red power magazine for starters, you should find some more about them. Farmphoto may even have some of them.

But if you really want to see some cool stuff. Click here.

East Prairie, MO

From the talk on here before they steered it with the brakes, said it went through brakes pretty fast! The picture of it in bad shape was supposedly it sitting on a loading dock behind a college in Nebraska or something like that...

That is a CAT undercarriage prototype for the Challenger row crops. Use to sit at the CAT Challenger plant in Dekalb, IL.

Central Iowa
The story goes something like Caterpillar way back in the day thought about designing and marketing a tracks kit for current Ag tractors instead of designing and manufacturing an entire tracks tractor. Sort of like an aftermarket deal, the kits where setup to be bolt on and steer the tractor only via the rear brakes. This particular 4955 had a bunch of brake modifications to get its brakes to live for any amount of time in that configuration. Caterpillar must have determined that this was not a very practical way to steer a tracks tractor but they must have seen value in having tracks on a tractor instead of wheels because as they say the rest is history.

Now, I am not sure if Caterpillar had two 4955s or just one. But this particular 4955 that I posted pictures of rusting out on the University of Wisconsin campus a few years ago has since found a new home, ironically very near Waterloo, IA as UW didn’t have much use for it anymore. Here is a picture of it from this year.

Problem is, CAT was already marketing the 65's when the JD 55 series was in production.

I dont know much about track tractors, but what kind of mechanism do they use so that you can steer with the steering wheel rather than the brakes? You would have thought cat would of had something lined up like that before they even tried it

They all use differential steer. They have a planet carrier around the punkin that changes the speed of one side relative to the other.

Click here. Look for the notes on tacked vehicle transmissions, and you'll some really good illistrations about the variations of diff steering that have taken place over the years. If you have trouble with them, we can help you out, just ask.

Why on earth would you destroy a one-of-a-kind historical piece such as that?   That's just discusting.
